About Country Style Shops
Country Style has many locations across Canada. In 2006, they had 120 regular shops in Ontario. They also have over 420 smaller spots inside other places. These "non-traditional" spots can be found in gas stations, convenience stores, sports arenas, and even movie theatres.
Most customers visit Country Style for coffee. In fact, in 2001, over 70% of what people bought was coffee! Overall, Country Style has more than 1,000 locations. You can find them in Ontario, Western Canada, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.
Country Style's History
Country Style has been around for a long time. It first opened its doors in 1963 in Toronto. The company grew quickly in its early years. They opened 100 stores in their first 15 to 20 years.
By 1974, Country Style had 50 shops. At that time, it was the top coffee and donut place in Canada. It was even bigger than Tim Hortons for a short while! Tim Hortons became bigger two years later.
Expanding Across Canada
In the 1970s, Country Style started to open shops in Western Canada. This included cities like Vancouver and Calgary. In the early 1980s, they also expanded to Eastern Canada.
However, these new locations did not do very well. Country Style had to close many of them. By the 1990s, only a few shops in Alberta were left in the West. In the East, only shops in Nova Scotia and PEI remained open.
Changes and Growth
By 2001, Country Style faced tough competition. They had to close about a quarter of their stores. But since then, they have opened many new shops. Today, Country Style is the third-largest coffee chain in Canada. It is behind Tim Hortons and McDonald's.
In 2011, a company called MTY Food Group bought Country Style. They also bought Mr. Sub and combined it with Country Style.
New Look and Feel
In the mid-1990s, Country Style updated its logo. Then, in 2006, they changed their image again. They wanted a more modern and fancy look. This new style was called "Country Style Bistro Deli."
The new look included a fresh logo and a new website. They also added more deli-style food to their menu. New shops built with this style look more modern. They offer a wider range of foods like wraps, smoothies, and salads.
In 2017, Country Style shops in the Philippines were renamed "New Bistro Deli."
Helping Others
Country Style also believes in helping the community. In April 2003, they teamed up with the Make a Wish Foundation. This foundation helps make wishes come true for children with serious illnesses. Country Style chose them as their main charity.
