Cove's History
The area where Cove is located was first called Winfree's Cove. This name came from an early settler named A. B. J. Winfree.
Early Businesses
In 1871, the first cotton gin in the county started working here. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. William Icet owned this gin.
Later, Icet sold the gin. From then until 1915, he ran a shipyard with his two sons. The town also had a post office, which opened in 1894 but is now closed. The Icet family also operated a sawmill in the area. By 1920, about 150 people lived in Cove.
Growth and Becoming a City
After the 1940s, the population of Cove grew. This was because new chemical plants were built nearby.
In the 1970s, there were rumors that Baytown, a larger city about 13 miles southwest, wanted to take over Cove. To prevent this, 84 residents asked Beach City to annex their community in September 1970. Annexation means one city takes control of an area next to it.
Beach City officially annexed Cove in November 1970. However, Baytown did not agree with this. In 1971, Baytown sued Beach City to stop the annexation.
Finally, in 1973, Beach City gave up its claim to Cove. On May 23, 1973, the people of Cove voted to become their own city. Leroy Stevens became Cove's first mayor.
