Geography of Beach City

Beach City is found in the western part of Chambers County. It stretches for about 7 miles along the northwest shore of Trinity Bay. The city is located about 9 to 10 miles southeast of Baytown.

The United States Census Bureau says that Beach City covers a total area of about 4.48 square miles (11.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

How Beach City Started

After World War II, many people had more free time and money. They started looking for fun places to relax. People from nearby Baytown began building small summer homes or "fishing camps" along the shoreline where Beach City is now. By the early 1950s, a road leading to these homes was even called "Tri-City Beach Road." This was because Baytown itself had formed from three smaller towns.

Many of these visitors loved the area so much that they decided to stay. By the early 1960s, about 500 people lived there permanently. At this time, Texas was changing its laws about how cities could grow. Before, big cities could easily take over smaller areas nearby. To protect themselves, many small communities decided to become official cities. The Tri-City Beach community was one of them.

Becoming a City

On April 6, 1963, the Tri-City Beach Civic Association was created. This group worked to improve their community. They thought about building a breakwater to protect the shore. Soon, they started thinking about becoming an official city.

A special committee was formed to help with this. On March 8, 1966, they asked the County Judge to hold an election. The nearby city of Baytown agreed to let this new city form. On April 5, 1966, the people voted. The results were 103 votes for becoming a city and only 4 against! Beach City officially became a city on April 11, 1966.

After becoming a city, the first local leaders were chosen in an election on May 21, 1966. Eloice Jordan was elected as the first mayor. Five aldermen (city council members) were also chosen. Gus Dauzat became the first city marshal, like a police chief.

Growing the City

In 1967, the Beach City Volunteer Fire Department was started. It still helps keep the community safe today.

Beach City grew bigger over time. On August 19, 1968, the city added more land near Point Barrow Road. This brought the historic home site of an early pioneer, Solomon Barrow, into the city limits. Later, on October 27, 1970, Beach City added the area where its Community Building and Fire Station are located.

There was also a time when Beach City considered adding the community of Cove. However, after some discussions and legal steps, Cove became its own separate city on May 23, 1973.
