Craggie Cat facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Craggie Cat is a small, rounded hill in Scotland. It's located in Aberdeenshire, near the southern edge of a place called Netherley. This hill is part of the Mounth, which is a lower section of the larger Grampian Mountains.

Craggie Cat isn't a huge mountain. Its highest point is about 198 metres (or 650 feet) above sea level. This measurement comes from the Ordnance Survey, which is like the official map-making group in the UK. The land around Craggie Cat includes some moorland, which is an open area with low-growing plants like heather.

Craggie Cat's Past

Craggie Cat has a connection to ancient times. It sits between two old Roman Camps: Raedykes to the south and Normandykes to the north. These camps were temporary forts built by Roman soldiers.

Imagine Roman troops marching through Scotland many centuries ago. They would have needed safe paths to travel between their camps. Experts believe that a route they used, called the Elsick Mounth trackway, might have passed right by Craggie Cat.

This path was probably chosen carefully. It helped the soldiers avoid difficult areas. To the west, there was wet, boggy ground that would have been hard to cross. To the northeast, there was a very large and impassable bog called Red Moss. So, marching near Craggie Cat would have offered a much easier journey.

Other interesting historical places are also close to Craggie Cat. These include Netherley House and the old Muchalls Castle.
