History of Cragsmoor

Cragsmoor started as a special place for artists. It was first called Evansville. Artists found this beautiful area in the early 1870s. By 1879, it became an official art colony. In 1893, its name was changed to Cragsmoor.

Two important places in Cragsmoor are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical value. These places are Chetolah and the Cragsmoor Historic District.

The first train arrived in the region in 1871. This made it much easier for people to visit Cragsmoor. It also helped bring food and supplies to the area.

Geography and Nature

Cragsmoor covers an area of about 4.4 square miles (11 km2). All of this area is land.

The center of Cragsmoor is about 1,800 feet (550 m) above sea level. This is much higher than nearby towns like Ellenville.

The community has a very natural and wooded feel. Most of the homes are older and simple. They often sit on large pieces of land with many tall trees. There are also many undeveloped forests. This makes property in Cragsmoor quite valuable. The town does not have a big shopping area. It only has a post office.

In 1996, a large part of the hamlet, about 3,620 acres (14.6 km2), was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This area is called the Cragsmoor Historic District. It includes buildings designed by famous architects like Bert Goldsmith and Frederick S. Dellenbaugh.

A long hiking trail called the Long Path goes through the center of Cragsmoor. It leads to Sam's Point Preserve.
