History of Craig
In the 1800s, the land around Craig was home to several Native American groups. These included the Pawnee, Otoe-Missouria, and Omaha people. Many American Indian people lived here when settlers from Europe began arriving in the 1860s.
The village of Craig was started as a place for trains to get water. It was built along the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway. The town was named after William Stewart Craig. He was an early settler who gave the land for the town in the early 1880s. Craig was officially planned out in 1881.
Before the 1920s, Craig's Main Street was a busy place for shops and businesses. But when cars became popular, people could easily drive to bigger towns to shop. This made Main Street less busy. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Craig faced tough economic times. The First National Bank of Craig closed in 1933.
Craig's Water Tower

Craig has a special water tower that looks like a tall pipe. It was built a long time ago, in the early 1900s. Even though its walls have become thinner over the years, it still works. This tower helps supply water to the entire town.
