Craig Cwm Amarch is a mountain peak in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It is part of the Cadair Idris mountain range, which is located within the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.
This peak is often confused with another nearby spot called Craig y Cau. But they are actually different places! Craig Cwm Amarch refers to the rocky cliffs at the very top of a valley called Cwm Amarch.
What's in a Name?
Sometimes, people who aren't from the local area get the names of these places mixed up. Let's clear up the confusion!
Craig Cwm Amarch
The name 'Craig Cwm Amarch' describes the rocky cliffs that form the back wall of Cwm Amarch valley. These cliffs stick out from the south into a ridge called Mynydd Pencoed. Mynydd Pencoed is a smaller part of the larger Cadair Idris mountain range.
Craig y Cau
On the other hand, 'Craig y Cau' is the name for the eastern end of the Mynydd Pencoed ridge. This spot looks out over a lake called Llyn Cau. So, while they are close, they are distinct parts of the mountain.
Mynydd Pencoed and Daear Fawr
Mynydd Pencoed is a ridge that connects to Craig Cwm Amarch. In Welsh, "Mynydd" means "mountain" or "upland". Mountain slopes in Wales often get their names from the farms that used to own the grazing land there. Mynydd Pencoed is named after a farm (whose buildings are now old and unused) at its western base.
You might also hear the term Daear Fawr. This means 'large ground' in Welsh. It might refer to a specific area on the Pencoed ridge.
