Crane is a city in Texas, United States. It is the main town and county seat of Crane County, Texas. In 2020, about 3,478 people lived there.

History of Crane, Texas

Crane got its post office in 1908. But the town really grew after oil was found in the Permian Basin in 1926. Many people came looking for work and a new life.

The streets in Crane are named after the children of O.C. Kinnison. He was the person who planned the town's layout. By 1930, Crane was a busy "boomtown." It had churches and shops.

At first, there weren't many services for the workers. But after the town became official in the early 1930s, they built paved roads and other important things.

The most people living in Crane was 3,796 in 1960. The number has gone down a bit since then. But Crane is still the main place for the oil fields in the county.

You can learn about local history at the Museum of the Desert Southwest. The Crane County Historical Commission runs this museum.
