Have you ever bitten into a soft, sweet bun filled with creamy goodness? That's a cream bun or cream roll! These yummy treats are popular all over the world. They usually start as a special bread roll made with a rich dough. After baking and cooling, the bun is carefully sliced open and filled with delicious cream.
Cream Buns Around the World
Cream buns come in many exciting forms, depending on where you are in the world. Each country often has its own special twist on this delightful dessert.
European Cream Buns
In England, especially in places like Devon and Cornwall, you might find "splits." These are yeasty buns filled with thick, rich clotted cream. Over in Italy, specifically in the Lazio region, they have "maritozzi." These are rich buns often made with dried fruit and filled with fluffy whipped cream. The Netherlands offers "roombroodjes," which are buns filled with smooth pastry cream.
In Northern Europe, especially Sweden, people enjoy soft buns spiced with cardamom. These are called Semla and are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday, a day before the start of Lent.
Asian Cream Buns
The Hong Kong sweet bun is a very common pastry there. You can often find it in bakeries in Chinatown areas around the world too. This bun usually has a filling of either butter cream or whipped cream right down the middle. It's often sprinkled with coconut flakes on the outside. A fun variation is the "Cream Horn," which is a spiral-shaped pastry, just like a horn, also filled with cream.
In India, cream buns are super popular and sold in most bakeries and grocery stores. They usually have a wide, oval shape. The bun is cut in half lengthwise, and both flat inner surfaces are generously filled with cream before being put back together.
