Cressona is a small town, also called a borough, located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It was officially formed in 1857. The town is named after John Chapman Cresson. He was an important engineer from Philadelphia. He helped manage the Schuylkill Navigation Company and was president of a railroad. He also worked as the chief engineer for Fairmount Park in Philadelphia.

History of Cressona

Before Cressona became a town, it was mostly wild land. There were only a few small farms. This changed when the Mine Hill Road was built.

In 1831, the Mine Hill and Schuylkill Railroad was finished. Its tracks ran right through the area that would become Cressona. The town was first called West Haven. Later, its name was changed to Cressona. The borough was officially made a town on February 2, 1857.

Cressona is located at 40°37′49″N 76°11′35″W / 40.63028°N 76.19306°W / 40.63028; -76.19306. It covers an area of about 1.0 square mile (2.58 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The town is about four miles south of Pottsville. You can reach Cressona using state routes 61, 183, and 901. The West Branch Schuylkill River flows through the town. Cressona is part of the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. This area is known for its history of coal mining.
