What's in a Name?
The name Croaghanmoira comes from the Irish words Cruachán Mhaigh Rath. This means "little stack of Moira."
The "Moira" part of the name has an interesting history. It refers to the "Earl of Moira." This Earl owned land near Greenan a long time ago. Records show that in 1805, the Ballinacor Estate was bought from him. At that time, the mountain was known as the "Cruachán" (little stack) behind his house. Another old name for this mountain was "The Mottie."
Mountain Features
Croaghanmoira is known for its "prominence." This means how much a mountain rises above the land around it. Croaghanmoira's prominence is 209 meters (686 feet).
Because of this prominence, Croaghanmoira is called a Marilyn. A Marilyn is a mountain that rises at least 150 meters (492 feet) above the surrounding land. It is also listed among the "100 Highest Irish Mountains."
