On March 22, 2024, a terrible event happened at Crocus City Hall. This is a big music place in Krasnogorsk, a city near Moscow, Russia. A band called Picnic was going to play a show that night.
Before the concert started, some masked gunmen attacked the people inside. They also used fire-starting devices to set the building on fire. The fire spread very quickly, covering a huge area. Hours later, the roof of the building fell in. This attack sadly killed at least 137 people and hurt more than 180 others. Some people died from breathing in too much smoke. This was the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia since the Beslan school siege in 2004.
Russia's Foreign Ministry officially called this event a terrorist attack. A group called Islamic State – Khorasan Province (also known as ISIS-K) said they were responsible. This group is connected to the Islamic State and is based in parts of South Asia and Central Asia.
By March 23, eleven people were arrested, including four people believed to be the attackers. Officials later said that none of the attackers were Russian citizens. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attack a "barbaric terrorist act." He announced that March 24 would be a national day of mourning for everyone who died.
What Happened After the Attack?

Even though the police had blocked off the area, people still came to Crocus City Hall. They left flowers and other tributes to remember the victims. In Moscow, many billboards showed memorial posters with a candle and the message Skorbim, which means "We mourn."
On March 23, President Putin spoke to the country. He said that March 24 would be a day for everyone to mourn the victims. He also promised that those responsible would be punished. Putin also stated that all the attackers had been caught. He compared them to the Nazis.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all big events in the city for the weekend. Security was made much stronger at airports, train stations, and subway stations. The Russian Ministry of Culture later canceled events all over the country. In Saint Petersburg, shopping centers were closed, and the Leningrad Oblast region was put on high alert.
Many people helped by donating blood for the injured victims. At least 3,000 people gave blood at the Gavrilov Blood Center in Moscow, which is the country's biggest blood donation center. Other medical places also received blood donations. Some banks, like Sberbank, Sovcombank, and Home Bank, promised to help the families of those who were killed or hurt by settling their loans and debts.
A friendly football match was planned between the Russian team and the Paraguayan team on March 25. This game, set to happen at the VTB Arena in Moscow, was put off until later because of the attack.
