Sergey Semyonovich Sobyanin (Russian: Серге́й Семёнович Собя́нин) was born on June 21, 1958. He is a Russian politician. Since October 21, 2010, he has been the third Mayor of Moscow.
Before becoming Mayor, Sobyanin held several important roles. He was the governor of Tyumen Oblast from 2001 to 2005. He also led the Russian presidential administration from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he served as Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
Sobyanin is a member of the United Russia political party. This is the main ruling party in Russia. He has been elected to important positions within the party.

Early Life and Education
Sergey Sobyanin was born in Nyaksimvol, a village in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. This area was part of the Soviet Union at the time. His background includes both Russian and Mansi heritage.
In 1989, he earned a second degree in law. He studied at the Kutafin Moscow State Law University. He also wrote a research paper about the legal status of autonomous regions in Russia.
Political Journey
Sobyanin's political career began in 1991. He was elected as the mayor of Kogalym.
In 1993, he became the First Deputy Head of the Administration for the Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug. This was an important leadership role in the region.
He was re-elected in 1996 to lead the Khanty–Mansi Duma, which is like a regional parliament.
In 2000, he was appointed as the First Deputy to the President's representative in the Urals Federal District.
In 2001, he was elected as the governor of Tyumen Oblast. He was re-elected for this role in 2005.
In November 2005, he was appointed to lead the Administration of the President of Russia. This is a very high-level position.
Since October 21, 2010, he has been serving as the Mayor of Moscow.

City Planning and Improvements
Sobyanin has worked on changing how Moscow is planned and developed. He has tried to make city planning more sensible.
The city has put a lot of effort into making the city center more beautiful and friendly for people walking. They planted many trees and widened sidewalks. They also added special lanes for bicycles and a new public bike-sharing system called Velobike. Many building fronts were also renovated to improve their look.
Moscow Urban Renewal Initiative
One major project is the Moscow Urban Renewal Initiative. This plan involves tearing down old five-story apartment buildings. These buildings are known as Khrushchevka. They are often old and not very safe.
The plan is to move the people living in these old buildings into new, modern, and safe apartment buildings in the same area. This project aims to demolish over 5,000 old buildings. It will affect about 1.6 million residents.
Moscow Pride Parades
In 2011, Mayor Sobyanin stated that Pride Parades were not allowed in Moscow. This decision was criticized by groups supporting LGBT rights.
Some gay rights organizers tried to hold a parade without permission in May 2011. About 30 supporters were arrested during this event.
Personal Life
Sergey Sobyanin was married to Irina Sobyanina. They divorced in 2014. They have two daughters together.
Sanctions
In 2022, Sergey Sobyanin was added to a list of sanctioned individuals by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. This means there are restrictions on him due to international relations.
