Sergey Semyonovich Sobyanin (Russian: Серге́й Семёнович Собя́нин; born 21 June 1958) is a Russian politician. He has been the 3rd Mayor of Moscow since 21 October 2010. Before this, Sobyanin was the governor of Tyumen Oblast from 2001 to 2005. He also served as the Head of the Presidential Administration from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he was the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.

Sobyanin is a member of the United Russia political party. He is part of its main governing bodies. He was also the head of the party's Moscow branch for a time.

As Mayor of Moscow, Sobyanin has changed how the city develops. He has focused on improving public transport and city spaces. He also created Moscow Media, a group of TV channels, radio stations, and newspapers owned by the city government.

Early Life and Education

Sergey Sobyanin was born in the village of Nyaksimvol. This village is in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in Russia. He was born on June 21, 1958.

In 1989, he earned a second degree in law. This was from the All-Union Correspondence Institute of Law.

Political Journey

Sergey Sobyanin has held many important roles in Russian politics. His career began in local government.

Early Roles in Government

  • In 1991, he was chosen as the mayor of Kogalym.
  • From 1993, he served as the First Deputy Head of the Administration for the Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
  • On October 27, 1996, he was re-elected as a delegate and chairman of the Khanty–Mansi Duma.
  • On July 12, 2000, he became the First Deputy to the President's representative in the Urals Federal District.

Governor of Tyumen Oblast

On January 14, 2001, Sobyanin was elected governor of Tyumen Oblast. He was re-elected on February 17, 2005. He has been a member of the Supreme Council of the United Russia political party since 2004.

Roles in the Russian Government

In November 2005, he was appointed as the head of the Administration of the President of Russia. This is a very important position. From May 2008 to October 2010, he served as Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.

Becoming Mayor of Moscow

On October 21, 2010, Sergey Sobyanin became the Mayor of Moscow. He was chosen by the Moscow City Duma. He has been re-elected several times since then.

  • On September 8, 2013, he was re-elected as mayor. He ran as an independent candidate.
  • On September 9, 2018, he was re-elected for a third term.
