Crosbyton is a small city in Texas, USA. It is the main town, also called the county seat, of Crosby County. In 2020, about 1,492 people lived there. Crosbyton is also part of the larger Lubbock area.

A Look Back: Crosbyton's History

Crosbyton got its name from Stephen Crosby. He was a land office commissioner.

Early Days and Growth

In 1902, a company called C. B. Livestock bought 90,000 acres of land. By 1912, a special farm was set up. This "demonstration farm" showed how well cotton could grow there. This led to many land sales between 1907 and 1915.

The town officially started in 1908. The C. B. Livestock Company planned out the town area. Then, people started moving in. The first post office opened in July 1908. A large three-story hotel, the Crosbyton Inn, was also built that year.

Becoming the County Seat

In 1910, Crosbyton became the county seat. This means it's where the county government is located. It won a vote against another town called Emma. A railroad, the Crosbyton-South Plains Railroad, started running on April 10, 1911.

Modern Developments

Crosbyton's first hospital opened in 1947. Later, in 1975, the Crosbyton Municipal Airport was opened. In 1976, Texas Tech University built a huge solar dish. It was 65 feet wide and was the biggest in the world at that time. It was used to collect energy from the sun.

To remember the town's past, Zina Lamar started the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum in 1958. This museum keeps old items from the area's first settlers, called pioneers. It also works as a community center.

Where is Crosbyton?

Crosbyton is located in the middle of Crosby County. It's near U.S. Route 82. This road goes east to Dickens and west to Lubbock.

The city is about 2 miles west of Blanco Canyon. This area is on the eastern edge of a large flat land called the Llano Estacado. Crosbyton covers about 2.11 square miles (5.5 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area.
