Crosswords DS is a fun puzzle video game made by Nuevo Retro Games and released by Nintendo. It came out for the Nintendo DS handheld system. In some places, like Europe, it was called Nintendo Presents: Crossword Collection.
This game has more than 1,000 crossword puzzles for you to solve. You use the stylus to write your answers on the screen. Even though it's called Crosswords DS, it also includes other types of puzzles. You can play word search puzzles and anagram puzzles too! The game uses a special way of recognizing your handwriting. This is similar to how popular games like Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! work. Crosswords DS is part of the Touch! Generations game series. This series also includes other well-known games like Nintendogs.
How to Play the Game
Crosswords DS lets up to four players play together. It has two main ways to play: Training mode and Main Game mode. The Main Game includes three different kinds of puzzles. These are Crosswords, Word Searches, and Anagrams.
You hold your Nintendo DS like a book to play. The game uses a special handwriting system to help you solve the puzzles. All three puzzle types have different difficulty levels. As you play, you can unlock new puzzles and harder levels.
Crossword Puzzles
The crossword puzzle appears on the touch screen. You tap on a square with your stylus to make it bigger. Then, you write the letter you think is correct. If you write the right letter, it shows up in black. If it's wrong, it appears in red.
For harder puzzles, you can choose to turn off the "correct letter" hint. This means the game won't tell you if your letter is right or wrong. You can easily erase a letter or just write over it. The game will automatically move to the next empty square after you write a correct letter. It will move either across or down, depending on your setting.
Each puzzle gives you a certain number of hint points. You can use these if you get stuck. But using a hint will add one minute to your total time. When you finish a puzzle, the game shows how long it took you. It also gives you a grade based on your performance.
Word Search Puzzles
Word searches in the game have different categories. For example, a category might be "animals." This tells you what kind of words you need to find. Just like a regular word search, words can be found forwards, backwards, or diagonally.
To find a word, you touch the first letter with your stylus. Then, you drag the stylus to the last letter of the word. This will highlight the word. Once you find a word, it automatically gets crossed off the list. The game shows your time, but it doesn't give you a grade for word searches.
Anagram Puzzles
In anagram puzzles, you get a group of letters. Your goal is to find every word you can make using only those letters. Words with only two letters are not included. You drag the letter tiles with your stylus into a box to form words.
When you find a word, it appears on the top screen. Words are grouped by how many letters they have and listed in alphabetical order. Once you find all the possible words, the game shows your time. Like word searches, anagrams don't give you a grade.
Anagrams come in three difficulty levels:
- Short: Uses 4-letter words.
- Medium: Uses 5-letter words.
- Long: Uses 6-letter words.
You can earn medals for completing many anagram games. For example, you get medals for finishing 100, 200, and 300 games in each difficulty.
Sequel Game
In October 2012, Nintendo released a follow-up game. This new game was for the Nintendo 3DS system. It is called Crosswords Plus.
