Crowninshield Island, also known as Brown's Island, is a small island located off the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Since 1955, a group called The Trustees of Reservations has taken care of the island. They call it Crowninshield Island. However, many local people still know it as Brown's Island. The U.S. government also officially calls it Brown's Island.

History of Crowninshield Island

Early Owners of the Island

The Brown family owned this island for a long time. They owned it from 1797 until 1918. Later, in 1918, the Crowninshield family bought the island from the Browns for just $1. The Crowninshields were a well-known family from nearby Salem.

How the Island Got Its Name

In 1955, the Crowninshield family gave the island to The Trustees of Reservations. This group is the oldest land conservation organization in the United States. They help protect important natural places.

The Trustees decided to name the island Crowninshield Island. They did this to honor Louise E. du Pont Crowninshield. She was a very important person in saving historic places in America. She worked hard to protect old buildings and areas from 1925 until she passed away in 1958.
