Cryon is a small community in the north-west of New South Wales, Australia. It's often called a "hamlet," which means it's a very small village. Cryon is part of the Walgett Shire area.

It is located about 622 km (386 mi) from Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales. It's also 130 km (81 mi) west of Narrabri and 52 km (32 mi) east of Walgett. You can find Cryon along the Kamilaroi Highway. The land here is quite flat, and Cryon sits about 146 metres (479 ft) above sea level.

Discovering Cryon: A Small Australian Community

Cryon might be small, but it has an interesting history and plays a role in Australia's farming industry. It's a great example of how communities can change over time.

Where is Cryon Located?

Cryon is in a part of New South Wales known for its wide open spaces. It's in the north-western region of the state. This area is mostly flat plains, which are perfect for farming.

  • It's part of the Walgett Shire, a local government area.
  • The main road passing through is the Kamilaroi Highway.
  • Nearby towns include Walgett to the east and Narrabri further west.

Cryon's Past: The Railway Era

Long ago, Cryon was a much busier place. This was especially true when the Walgett railway line arrived in 1905.

  • The railway made Cryon a very important spot.
  • It became a busy center with shops and even a hotel.
  • For many years, cattle from South West Queensland were brought here. They were then loaded onto trains and sent to markets in Sydney.
  • This made Cryon a key transport hub for livestock.

Today, the railway still runs through Cryon, but it mostly carries freight like grain. It no longer transports cattle in the same way.

Life in Cryon Today

Cryon is much quieter now than it was in its railway heyday. Only a few buildings remain from its busy past.

  • You can still see a large wheat silo.
  • There are also several new bunker storages for grain.
  • These structures show what the main industry is in Cryon today.

The most important work in Cryon is farming. Farmers here mostly grow wheat. They also raise some livestock, like sheep or cattle.
