Crystal Nix-Hines is an American lawyer and diplomat. She was born on August 23, 1963. From July 2014 to January 2017, she served as the United States Ambassador to UNESCO. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is a special agency of the United Nations that works to build peace through international cooperation in education, science, and culture.
Early Life and Schooling
Crystal Nix-Hines grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father, Theophilus R. Nix Sr., was a lawyer. Her mother, Dr. Lulu Mae Nix, started groups that helped people in the community.
Crystal went to Wilmington Friends School with her sister and two brothers. After high school, she attended Princeton University. She graduated from Princeton in 1985. While there, she was a classmate of Michelle Robinson Obama. She was also the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian. Later, she served on Princeton's Board of Trustees for nine years.
In 1990, Crystal Nix-Hines graduated from Harvard Law School. At Harvard, she worked as an editor for the Harvard Law Review. She worked on the review with Barack Obama, who later became president.
Her Career Journey
After law school, Crystal Nix-Hines worked for judges. This job is called a "law clerk." From 1990 to 1991, she helped Judge William A. Norris of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Then, from 1991 to 1992, she worked for two very important judges. These were Justices Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States.
Crystal Nix-Hines also worked as a lawyer at different law firms. She held positions at the U.S. State Department. The State Department handles America's relationships with other countries. She helped with human rights issues and planned policies.
Before becoming an ambassador, Crystal Nix-Hines also worked in television. She was a writer and producer for shows like Commander-in-Chief, Alias, and The Practice. She even started her career as a reporter for The New York Times newspaper.
Serving as UNESCO Ambassador
On July 9, 2013, President Obama chose Crystal Nix-Hines for an important job. He nominated her to be the United States Ambassador to UNESCO. An ambassador is a high-ranking diplomat who represents their country in another country or at an international organization.
The U.S. Senate approved her nomination on June 12, 2014. She officially started her role on July 16, 2014. During her time as ambassador, she and her husband, David Hines, lived in Paris, France. She finished her term on January 20, 2017, when President Obama's time in office ended.
