Crystal Nix-Hines (born in 1963) is an American lawyer and diplomat. She served as the United States Ambassador to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). She held this important role from July 2014 to January 2017.
Early Life and Education
Crystal Nix-Hines grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father, Theophilus R. Nix Sr., was a lawyer. He was the second African-American attorney allowed to practice law in Delaware. Her mother, Dr. Lulu Mae Nix, started groups that helped people in the community.
Crystal went to the Wilmington Friends School with her sister and two brothers. One of her brothers works as a lawyer for the DuPont Corporation.
In 1985, Nix-Hines graduated from Princeton University. There, she was a classmate of Michelle Robinson Obama. She was also the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian. From 2006, she served for nine years on Princeton's Board of Trustees.
In 1990, she graduated from Harvard Law School. While there, she worked as an editor for the Harvard Law Review alongside Barack Obama.
Career
After law school, Crystal Nix-Hines worked for judges. From 1990 to 1991, she was a law clerk for Judge William A. Norris. He worked for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. A law clerk helps a judge with legal research and writing.
From 1991 to 1992, she was a law clerk for two Supreme Court Justices. These were Justices Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O’Connor. The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court in the country.
During her legal career, Nix-Hines worked at several law firms. She also held positions at the U.S. State Department. She helped with policy planning and advised on human rights.
Nix-Hines also worked in television. She was a writer and producer for popular TV shows. These included Commander-in-Chief, Alias, and The Practice. She started her career as a reporter for The New York Times newspaper.
UNESCO Ambassador
On July 9, 2013, President Obama chose Crystal Nix-Hines for a special job. She was nominated to be the United States Permanent Representative to UNESCO. This role has the rank of an ambassador. An ambassador represents their country in another place or organization.
The U.S. Senate approved her nomination on June 12, 2014. She officially started her job on July 16, 2014. During her time as ambassador, she and her husband, David Hines, lived in Paris, France. She left the position on January 20, 2017, when President Obama's term ended.
