The General Mariano Matamoros Airport (airport codes: CVJ, MMCB), also known as Cuernavaca Airport, is an airport in Temixco, Morelos, Mexico. It is very close to the city of Cuernavaca. This airport handles flights only within Mexico.
It is part of a group of airports around Mexico City. This group includes airports in Puebla, Querétaro, Pachuca, Mexico City, and Toluca. A company owned by the government, Aeropuerto de Cuernavaca S.A. de C.V., runs the airport.
The airport has one main building for passengers. It also has areas for private planes and a control tower. The airport was recently updated to make it more modern. Even with these updates, it remains a national airport. There were once plans to make it an international airport, but this did not happen. In 2021, the airport served 3,627 passengers.
A Look at Past Airlines and Flights
Many airlines have used Cuernavaca Airport over the years.
- Aerolíneas Internacionales used to have its main base here. This was before the airline stopped flying in 2003.
- Other airlines that have flown from here include Aeroméxico, ALMA de México, Avolar, Mexicana de Aviacion, and Volaris.
- VivaAerobus started flying from the airport again in July 2012. However, they stopped their service in September 2013.
- TAR began offering regular flights from the airport in March 2016.
Future Plans for the Airport
Leaders in the state of Morelos are working to make the airport busier.
- On April 11, 2019, José Manuel Sanz Rivera spoke about these plans. He was a top official for the Governor of Morelos.
- He said they were talking with Viva Aerobús to bring back regular flights.
- There are also plans to make the runway longer by 600 meters. This would allow bigger planes to land.
- A longer runway would help the airport serve as another option for flights. It could help when the airports in Toluca and Mexico City are very busy.
