Temixco is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away from Cuernavaca. It is also about 85 kilometers (53 miles) from Mexico City.

History of Temixco

Ancient Times

The land around Xochicalco was settled a very long time ago, around 200 BCE. Xochicalco was a big city between 650 and 900 AD. People believe that some people from Teotihuacan might have moved here.

Xochicalco traded with other groups in places like Oaxaca and the Yucatán Peninsula. Old rock carvings found at the Temple of the Feathered Serpents show that leaders from different areas met here. They met to fix their calendar during a solar eclipse.

Around 830 AD, people who spoke Nahuatl moved into the area. By 1428, when the Aztec Empire was forming, only two communities existed in what is now Temixco: Acatlipa and Cuentepec.

Colonial Period

After the Spanish arrived in 1521, Hernán Cortés was given a lot of land. This land included most of modern Morelos. The villages of Temixco at that time were Acatlipa, San Agustín Tetlama, and San Sebastián Cuentepec.

Wealthy Spanish people started the first sugar cane farms, called haciendas. One of these, the Hacienda of Temixco, was started in 1617. It grew sugar cane and later made sugar and rum.

19th Century Changes

In 1808, a man named Gabriel Joaquín de Yermo freed 200 enslaved people at his hacienda in Temixco. This was unusual for the time.

During the Mexican War of Independence (which started in 1810), the Temixco hacienda became a place to get supplies for the Spanish army.

In 1824, Temixco became part of the District of Cuernavaca. Later, in 1869, it became part of the new State of Morelos.

20th Century Growth

During the Mexican Revolution in 1914, there were battles at the Temixco hacienda. The Zapatistas, led by Emiliano Zapata, took control of it.

In 1921, Temixco became a "Congregación" (a type of town) and was called Real de Temixco. It was part of Cuernavaca. The Municipality of Temixco was officially created on March 5, 1933.

In the 1940s, during World War II, the Hacienda of Temixco became a place where Japanese-Mexican families lived. A school was even set up there for Japanese students.

The Hacienda of Temixco stopped growing sugar cane in 1968. It was then turned into a fun water park, which it still is today!

Temixco grew very fast in the 1970s as more people moved there. In 1990, Temixco officially became a ciudad (city).

21st Century Temixco

Temixco has continued to grow and change. A new bridge project was started in 2012 to connect a highway to the Cuernavaca Airport.

In recent years, Temixco has faced challenges. The city's mayor, Gisela Mota Ocampo, sadly passed away in 2016. Jazmin Juana Solano Lopez was elected as the new Municipal President in 2018.

In 2020, Temixco was the first place in Morelos to give the AstraZeneca vaccine to senior citizens.
