History of Culebras Alto
Puerto Rico has a long and interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count, or census, of everyone living in Puerto Rico. This census found that the combined population of Culebras Alto, along with two nearby barrios called Quebrada Arriba and Culebras Bajo, was 914 people.
