History of Culebras Bajo
Puerto Rico Becomes a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Since then, Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have the same status as a state.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Culebras Bajo, along with two other nearby areas called Quebrada Arriba and Culebras Alto, had a total of 914 people living there.
