The movie features the voices of famous actors like Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore, and Dick Van Dyke. Frank Welker voices George, the curious monkey. This film was the first fully animated movie from Imagine Entertainment. It was also the first movie from Universal Animation Studios to be shown in theaters.

The movie mixes traditional animation with 3D computer-generated backgrounds. It has music by Heitor Pereira and songs by the musician Jack Johnson. The film earned $69.8 million worldwide. Critics liked it, with Rotten Tomatoes calling it "a bright, sweet, faithful adaptation." A TV show based on the movie started seven months later.

Story of the Movie

The movie begins with a happy, artistic, and playful monkey living alone in the jungle. Meanwhile, Ted Shackleford (Will Ferrell) works at the Bloomsberry Museum. He often sees Ms. Maggie Dunlop (Drew Barrymore) and her students, who are the museum's only regular visitors.

Mr. Bloomsberry (Dick Van Dyke), the museum owner, tells Ted sad news. The museum is losing money and might have to close. Mr. Bloomsberry's son, Junior (David Cross), wants to tear down the museum. He plans to build a parking lot instead.

Ted agrees to go to Africa to find a special, very tall statue. It is called the "Lost Shrine of Zagawa." He hopes it will save the museum. Junior is very jealous of Ted's mission. Ted gets a funny yellow suit, which makes people laugh at him. He then sails to Africa on a cargo ship.

Ted's Discovery

In Africa, Ted finds what he thinks is the idol. But it is only three inches tall! He is very disappointed. He sends a picture to the museum. However, the picture's angle makes Mr. Bloomsberry think the statue is huge.

Ted also meets the little monkey. He gives the monkey his yellow hat. The monkey quickly likes Ted and secretly follows him onto the cargo ship. Ted returns home to find ads for the "huge" shrine all over the city. Mr. Bloomsberry calls Ted for a news interview at the museum.

The monkey follows Ted to his apartment. There, the monkey starts painting the penthouse apartment with African animals. Ted gets kicked out by the grumpy doorman, Ivan (Ed O'Ross), because pets are not allowed.

Ted goes to the museum and tells Mr. Bloomsberry the idol's real size. The monkey accidentally breaks an Apatosaurus skeleton. Junior then kicks Ted out of the museum.

George's Adventures

Ted and the monkey sleep outside in the city park. The next morning, Ted follows the monkey to the zoo. Maggie and her students name the monkey "George." George gets into trouble when he floats away on helium balloons over the city.

Ted quickly grabs many balloons and a kite to fly after George. He bumps into crocodiles, lions, and giraffes at the zoo. The chase ends when George's balloons pop on a building. Ted catches him just in time.

Ted and George go to the home of an inventor named Clovis (Eugene Levy). George uses an overhead projector to make the small idol look 40 feet tall. Ted and George rush to the museum to show Mr. Bloomsberry their plan.

Junior tries to stop his father from tricking the public. But Mr. Bloomsberry thinks it is the only way to save the museum. Junior feels ignored and pours a cup of latte on the projector. It explodes, and Junior blames George.

Ted tells the crowd outside the museum that it will close. He also says they do not have the idol. Ted feels his life is ruined. He lets animal control take George away.

Finding the Real Idol

Ted talks with Ms. Maggie. She helps him see what is truly important in his life. Ted regrets letting George go. He drives his car off a closed pier and onto George's cargo ship to get him back. Ted tells George that their "buddyship" is what matters most.

On the ship, George finds a secret message on the idol. When light shines on it, a pictogram appears. It says, "turn your eye to the light, go from blindness to sight." It turns out the small idol is a map to the real, huge idol!

They sail back to Africa. George helps Ted find the real idol, which is indeed forty feet tall.

Happy Ending

The giant idol is placed in the museum. The museum becomes very successful. It becomes more interactive with Clovis's inventions. Ms. Dunlop and her students also help, and of course, George is a big part of its success.

Junior is sad about not getting his parking lot. But he gets a job as the valet and finds joy when Mr. Bloomsberry finally shows pride in him. Ivan invites Ted to move back into his apartment because he likes George. Ted and Maggie almost start a romance. But George causes more trouble by starting a rocket ship, and Ted has to follow him again!
