Cursed is an American fantasy drama TV show that first appeared on Netflix on July 17, 2020. It's based on an illustrated book with the same name by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler. The story takes place in the United Kingdom. In July 2021, the show was canceled after just one season.

About the Story

Cursed tells a new version of the famous Arthurian legend. It's seen through the eyes of Nimue, a brave young woman with a special gift. She is meant to become the powerful Lady of the Lake.

After her mother dies, Nimue teams up with Arthur, a young fighter. They go on a mission to find Merlin and give him an ancient sword. As Nimue's journey continues, she becomes a symbol of hope and strength. She stands against the scary Red Paladins and their leader, King Uther. The show is about growing up and finding the courage to lead. It also touches on themes like protecting nature and dealing with conflict.

Main Characters

Nimue's Journey

• Katherine Langford plays Nimue. She is a young Fey woman, which means she has magical abilities. Her village doesn't fully accept her. After her village is attacked by the Red Paladins, her dying mother gives her a powerful sword. Nimue must take this sword to Merlin. She struggles with the sword's power and learns about her own magical family history. She eventually becomes the "Wolf-Blood Witch" and the Fey Queen.

Arthur's Role

• Devon Terrell plays Arthur. He is a mercenary, a fighter who works for money. He becomes Nimue's main friend and love interest. Arthur tries to overcome the bad reputation left by his father. He becomes a helper to the Fey people and slowly earns back his family's honor.

Merlin's Secrets

• Gustaf Skarsgård plays Merlin. He was once a very powerful magician who has lived for hundreds of years. Now, he advises King Uther. Merlin wants to fix mistakes from his past by destroying the Sword of Power. He believes the sword has dark magic that will corrupt anyone who uses it. He also lost his own magic because of this sword.

The Weeping Monk

• Daniel Sharman plays the Weeping Monk, who is actually Lancelot. He is a very strong warrior in the Red Paladins' army. He often turns the tide in battles between humans and Fey. He seems able to track Fey people and leads the Paladins to them, showing no mercy.

King Uther

• Sebastian Armesto plays King Uther. He is a powerful but confused king. He relies on Merlin's advice until he finds out Merlin can no longer do magic. Uther then seeks guidance from his mother, but her own political goals cause problems. He wants the Sword of Power to make his claim to the throne stronger.

Nimue's Friends

• Lily Newmark plays Pym, Nimue's best friend. She escapes their village's destruction. She is later rescued by Dof and joins a group of pirate raiders led by Red Spear. She pretends to be a healer to survive.
• Matt Stokoe plays the Green Knight, also known as Gawain. He is an old friend of Nimue and a champion warrior of the Fey. He works to save the Fey people from being hunted down.

The Red Paladins

• Peter Mullan plays Father Carden. He leads the Red Paladins, a group of religious fanatics. He spreads the idea that Fey are evil and leads his group to hunt them down. He tricks Lancelot into helping the Paladins hunt his own kind.

Arthur's Sister

• Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Sister Igraine, who is actually Morgana. She is Arthur's sister. She was sent to a convent and becomes a strong ally of the Fey. She uses a different name at the abbey. She helps Nimue and later becomes one of Nimue's main advisors. Morgana eventually discovers she has the potential to become a powerful sorceress.

How it Started

In 2018, Netflix announced they would make Cursed into a TV series with ten episodes. The show is based on the book by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler. Miller and Wheeler also worked as executive producers for the show. In September 2018, Zetna Fuentes was chosen to direct and produce the first two episodes. Sadly, on July 9, 2021, Netflix decided to cancel the series after just one season.

Who Was Cast

In September 2018, Katherine Langford was chosen for the main role. In March 2019, more actors joined the cast. These included Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgård, Peter Mullan, Lily Newmark, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Daniel Sharman, Sebastian Armesto, Emily Coates, and Billy Jenkins. Frank Miller, one of the creators, even made a small appearance in the show.

Where it Was Filmed

In January 2019, work began on building the sets for the show. This happened on old Army land in Deepcut, England. Filming was planned to start in March 2019 and continue until September 2019.

Release Date

The series was released on Netflix on July 17, 2020.
