Curuguaty (Spanish pronunciation: [kuɾuɣwaˈti]) is an important city and district in the Canindeyú Department of Paraguay. Its original name was Villa de San Isidro Labrador de los Reyes Católicos de Curuguaty. This city was very important during the Paraguayan War (1869–1870). It served as the fourth and final capital of Paraguay during that conflict.

A Look Back: Curuguaty's History
Curuguaty was founded on May 15, 1712. It was established by Juan Gregorio de Bazán y Pedraza. The city was first named “Villa de San Isidro Labrador de los Reyes Católicos de Curuguaty.” It was built along the banks of the Curuguaty River.
During the time of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, Paraguay's first dictator, an important person lived here. José Gervasio Artigas, who helped free Uruguay, lived in exile in Curuguaty for over 30 years.
Curuguaty played a big role in the Paraguayan War (also called the War of the Triple Alliance). Marshall López, the leader of Paraguay, made Curuguaty the fourth and final capital of the country. The Vice-President, Domingo Francisco Sánchez Corvalán, also stayed in the city. Marshall López moved his troops near Curuguaty, by the Itandey Stream. This was when he was heading towards the Amambay Mountains, where the last battles of the war took place.

How to Visit Curuguaty
Curuguaty is located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) from Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. You can reach the city by taking Route No. III “Gral. Elizardo Aquino.” Another way is through Route No. X “Las Residentas.” This road connects the department's capital with Asunción. The superhighway of Itaipu also links Curuguaty to Alto Paraná and Presidente Franco.
Once you arrive in Curuguaty, you can take an unpaved road to the left. This road leads to places like Villa Ygatimí, Ypehú, Itanará, and the Mbaracayú Forest National Reserve.
