Custon is a small place in the south-east of South Australia. It is part of the beautiful Limestone Coast region. Custon is about 267 kilometers (166 miles) south-east of Adelaide, the state capital. It is also very close to the border with the State of Victoria.

History of Custon

Custon started as a "government town." This means the government planned and set up the town. It was officially created on December 8, 1881. The town was named after Reverend Percy Cust. He married Lucy Caroline Jervois, whose father, William Jervois, was the Governor of South Australia at the time.

Over the years, parts of the original town area changed. In 1993, the government town of Custon officially stopped existing. However, in 2000, new boundaries were set for a "locality" called Custon. This new area kept the well-known name.

What is Custon like?

Most of the land in Custon is used for farming. This is called "primary production." It means people grow crops or raise animals there.

Custon also has a special area set aside for nature. It is called the Custon Conservation Park. This park helps protect local plants and animals.

A railway line, called the Mount Gambier railway line, used to run through Custon. It went from north to south. This railway line closed on April 12, 1995. The old Custon railway station was actually just south of Custon, in a place called Wolseley.

Who lives in Custon?

According to a count in August 2016, only 20 people lived in Custon. This makes it a very small community.
