Cyrus Livingston Dunham (January 16, 1817 – November 21, 1877) was an important politician from Indiana. He was also a lawyer and a soldier. He is best known for serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Indiana from 1849 to 1855.

Cyrus Dunham's Early Life and Career

Cyrus Dunham was born in Dryden, New York in 1817. He went to public schools when he was young. Later, he became a school teacher himself.

After studying law, he became a lawyer. In 1841, he moved to Salem, Indiana and started his law practice.

Entering Politics in Indiana

Dunham was elected as a prosecuting attorney for Washington County, Indiana in 1845. This job meant he helped the government in court cases.

From 1846 to 1847, he served in the Indiana House of Representatives. This is part of Indiana's state government.

Serving in the U.S. Congress

Cyrus Dunham then ran for a seat in the U.S. Congress. He won and represented Indiana from 1849 to 1855. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

During his time in Congress, he led the Committee on Roads and Canals. This committee helped decide how to build and improve roads and waterways.

After Congress: Secretary of State

After his time in Congress, Dunham returned to Indiana. The Governor of Indiana, Ashbel P. Willard, chose him for a new role. Dunham became the Secretary of State of Indiana. He held this position from 1859 to 1860.

Military Service During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Cyrus Dunham joined the Union Army. He served as a Colonel in the 50th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He started his service on December 1, 1861. He was honorably discharged on November 4, 1863.

Later Life and Public Service

After the war, Dunham was again elected to the Indiana State House of Representatives. He served another term from 1864 to 1865.

On January 6, 1870, he married Malvina B. Markwell. He also lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana. From 1871 to 1874, he served as a Judge for the Criminal Court in Clark County, Indiana.
