Darryl Gerard "D. J." Augustin Jr. (born November 10, 1987) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). D. J. Augustin was a point guard known for his quickness and shooting skills. He played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns from 2006 to 2008. He was chosen ninth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2008 NBA draft.

Early Life and High School Basketball
D. J. Augustin was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2005, his family had to leave New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. He played his last year of high school basketball at Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas. Even so, he received his diploma from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans.
While at Brother Martin, Augustin helped his team win two state championships. At Hightower, he was known for his accurate passing and shooting. In his first game there, he almost got a triple-double with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 14 assists. He led Hightower to a 26–4 record that season.
Augustin earned many awards in high school. He was named the Houston Chronicle player of the year. He was also chosen as a McDonald's All American, which means he was one of the best high school players in the country. He played as the point guard for the West team in the McDonald's All-American game.
College Career at Texas
Freshman Year Success
D. J. Augustin joined the Longhorns basketball team in 2006. He started all 35 games as the point guard during his first year. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. Because of his great play, he was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. He also made the Big 12 All-Rookie Team.
After his freshman year, Augustin could have joined the 2007 NBA draft. However, he decided to stay in college to improve his game.
Sophomore Year Achievements
In the fall of 2007, Augustin earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. This showed he was excellent both on the court and in the classroom. He was named first-team Academic All-America. This is a special honor for student-athletes.
On April 3, 2008, he received the Bob Cousy Award. This award goes to the best college point guard in the nation. On April 23, 2008, Augustin decided to enter the NBA Draft.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting with the Charlotte Bobcats (2008–2012)
The Charlotte Bobcats chose D. J. Augustin as the ninth overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. He signed his first professional contract on July 8, 2008. He made his NBA debut on October 30, scoring 12 points.
The 2010–11 season was one of Augustin's best. He started all 82 games for the Bobcats. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Moving to Other Teams (2012–2016)
After his time with the Bobcats, Augustin played for several other NBA teams. He joined the Indiana Pacers in 2012. In 2013, he signed with the Toronto Raptors. Later that year, he moved to the Chicago Bulls.
While with the Bulls, Augustin had a career-high game. On March 30, 2014, he scored 33 points in a win against the Boston Celtics.
He then played for the Detroit Pistons in 2014. On January 25, 2015, he scored a new career-high of 35 points against the Toronto Raptors. Later in 2015, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2016, he was traded again to the Denver Nuggets.
Years with the Orlando Magic (2016–2020)
On July 7, 2016, Augustin signed a four-year contract with the Orlando Magic. He became an important player for the team. On March 14, 2018, he scored 32 points against the Milwaukee Bucks.
A memorable moment came on April 13, 2019. Augustin scored 25 points and hit the game-winning three-pointer. This helped the Magic upset the Toronto Raptors in the first game of the playoffs.
Later Career and Retirement (2020–2024)
In November 2020, Augustin signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. He made his debut for them on Christmas Day, scoring 13 points. In March 2021, he was traded to the Houston Rockets. He played for the Rockets until February 2022.
In March 2022, Augustin signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. He played his last NBA game with them. On November 3, 2024, D. J. Augustin announced he was retiring from basketball. He played for 14 seasons in the NBA, showing great skill and dedication.
