Early Life and High School Basketball
D. J. Augustin was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2005, his family had to leave New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. He played his senior year of high school basketball at Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas. Even though he played there, he earned his diploma from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. He also joined his Hightower classmates for their graduation ceremony.
While playing for Brother Martin, Augustin helped his team win two state championships. At Hightower, he was known for his amazing passes and accurate shots. In his first game as a Hightower Hurricane, he almost achieved a triple-double. He scored 29 points, had 8 rebounds, and made 14 assists in a big win.
Augustin led Hightower to the third round of the playoffs, and they finished the season with a great record of 26 wins and 4 losses. He received many awards after the season. He was named the MVP of his district and the Houston Chronicle player of the year. He was also chosen for the first-team All-Greater Houston and first-team All-State teams.
D. J. Augustin finished his high school career as a McDonald's All American. He started as the point guard for the West team in the All-American game. He played against Kevin Durant, who would later become his teammate at Texas. He was also named a fourth-team Parade All-American.
College Basketball Career
Becoming a Longhorn Star
Augustin was one of seven new players to join the Longhorn basketball team for the 2006–07 season. He started every one of the 35 games that season as the team's point guard. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. Because of his great play, he was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. He also made the Big 12 All-Rookie Team.
Augustin had the chance to enter the 2007 NBA draft with his Longhorn teammate Kevin Durant. However, he decided to stay in college. He wanted to improve his game even more with the Longhorns.
Academic and Athletic Success
In the fall of 2007, Augustin earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. This raised his overall GPA to 3.64. On February 27, 2008, he was named first-team Academic All-America. This award recognizes student-athletes who excel in both sports and academics. He was only the second Texas Longhorn basketball player to receive this honor.
On April 3, 2008, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame gave him the Bob Cousy Award. This award goes to the best college point guard in the nation. On April 23, 2008, Augustin announced he would enter the NBA Draft. He later hired an agent, which meant he could no longer play college basketball.
