Dallas Center is a small city located in Dallas County, Iowa, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,901 people lived there. It's part of the larger Des Moines area, which is a big group of cities and towns.

History

Dallas Center began in 1869. This was after a railroad was built through the area. The city was named after George M. Dallas, who was a Vice President of the United States.

Dallas Center officially became a city on March 22, 1880.

Geography

Dallas Center covers an area of about 4.58 square miles (11.86 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The city is located about 20 miles (32 km) west-northwest of Des Moines. It is also about 9 miles (14 km) west of Grimes.

In 2020, the city had 1,901 people living in 721 households. The population density was about 360 people per square mile. Most residents were White, with smaller numbers of other racial backgrounds. About 2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Fun Parks and Recreation

Dallas Center has two large parks for everyone to enjoy.

Mound Park

Mound Park is on the west side of the city. It has sand volleyball courts and a gazebo. You can also find shelters, a tennis court, and playground equipment there. During the summer, there's even a rollerskating rink.

Memorial Park

Memorial Park is on the east side. It has playground equipment and lots of open space. This is great for flying kites or letting dogs run around. There's also a nine-hole disc golf course and a basketball area.

Raccoon River Valley Trail

The Raccoon River Valley Trail is a long paved path perfect for biking or walking. A 33.1-mile (53.3 km) loop of this trail was added in 2009. It connects Dallas Center to nearby towns like Minburn and Perry.

The main trail is about 56 miles (90 km) long. It goes through many towns, including Clive, Urbandale, and Adel. The entire trail system is nearly 90 miles (145 km) of paved paths.

In Dallas Center, the trail starts at 14th and Walnut. This spot has restrooms, a water fountain, bike racks, and picnic tables.

Education

Dallas Center shares a school district with the city of Grimes. This is called the Dallas Center–Grimes Community School District.

The district has several schools:

  • Dallas Center Elementary School (Kindergarten to 4th grade) is in Dallas Center.
  • South Prairie Elementary (K-4), North Ridge Elementary (K-4), and Heritage Elementary (K-4) are in Grimes.
  • The middle school (grades 5-6) is in Dallas Center.
  • Oak View (grades 7-8) and Dallas Center-Grimes High School are in Grimes.

The school mascot is the Mustangs. Their team colors are red and white.
