History of Dalworthington Gardens
This community started in 1934 during a tough time called the Great Depression. The government had a plan to help families. It was called the "subsistence homestead project." The idea was to help people live better by working part-time jobs and growing their own food.
Dalworthington Gardens was one of five such projects in Texas. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, suggested this area. She visited the Fort Worth family of her son's fiancée and liked the spot.
Out of the five projects, Dalworthington Gardens is the only one still around today. It has kept its original rules about land use. This means that some older homes on larger lots can still have farm animals. So, you might see a small, older house with livestock next to a big, modern house worth a lot of money!
The city's name is a mix of three nearby cities: Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington. This kind of mixed name is called a portmanteau.
