Danbury is a small city in Danbury Township, Stokes County, North Carolina, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, for Stokes County. In 2020, about 142 people lived there.
Danbury is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Winston-Salem. It is often called the "Gateway to Hanging Rock". This means it's a great starting point for visiting the park.
Many important county offices are in Danbury. These include the Stokes County Government Center and the Arts Council. You can also find the school board, county jail, and a public library here. A post office and other public services are also within the town. LifeBrite Community Hospital of Stokes is nearby. North Stokes High School is about 7.4 miles (11.9 km) northwest of town.
Danbury is a popular spot for people who love to bike or ride motorcycles. It's also great for those who enjoy scenic drives. Stokes County has many beautiful roads. Outdoor lovers also visit Danbury because it's on the Dan River. It is also very close to Hanging Rock State Park.
You won't find big chain stores or restaurants in Danbury. Instead, there are local shops like the Danbury General Store. There are also small, local restaurants. J.E. Priddy's General Store is a historic place. It opened in the late 1800s and still sells goods today. You can find it about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of town.

History of Danbury
Danbury was started in 1851. It was created to be the new main town for Stokes County. Before this, Stokes County was split in 1849. This created Forsyth County to the south. Winston (now Winston-Salem) became the new county seat for Forsyth. Danbury was briefly called Crawford.
Danbury During the Civil War
No battles happened in Danbury during the American Civil War. However, the town helped the Confederate Army. The Moratock Iron Furnace was very important. It was used to melt iron ore for the war effort. You can still see this furnace in Moratock Park today.
On April 9, 1865, General George Stoneman's raid passed through Danbury. This was the same day Confederate forces surrendered. They gave up at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
Historic Places in Danbury
Besides the Moratock Iron Furnace, Danbury has other historic spots. These include the Wilson Fulton House and the Old Stokes County Court House. Moody's Tavern, later called McCanless Hotel, is also historic.
