Dane O'Brian Richards, born on December 14, 1983, is a former professional footballer from Jamaica. He played as a winger, which is a player who runs down the sides of the field. Most of his career was spent with the New York Red Bulls, a team in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Dane Richards' Football Journey

Early Years and College Soccer

Dane Richards started his football journey in Jamaica. He was part of the youth team at Seba United. While playing there, he also attended Cornwall College in Montego Bay. He helped his school win the DaCosta Cup and Olivier Shield.

In 2003, Dane moved to the United States to play college soccer. He played for two years at San Jacinto College in Houston. During his time there, he scored an amazing 45 goals. This included a school record of 25 goals in his second year.

After San Jacinto, Dane went to Clemson University. In his junior year, he was the top scorer for the team with 12 goals and nine assists. He scored the winning goal in three NCAA Tournament matches. He also scored in a close game against New Mexico in the College Cup semifinals. In 2006, his senior year, he scored 11 goals and made nine assists in 19 games. Clemson reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Dane was recognized as a second-team All-American player.

Professional Career Highlights

Playing for New York Red Bulls

Dane Richards was chosen by the New York Red Bulls in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. He quickly became the main right winger for the team. On May 5, 2007, he scored his first MLS goal in a 3–3 tie against Real Salt Lake. In his first season, he played in 28 matches and had two goals and six assists. His assists total was the second highest on his team and the most among all new players in the league. He was even nominated for the league's Rookie of the Year award.

In 2008, Dane played in 23 MLS matches, scoring 3 goals and making 6 assists. He helped the Red Bulls surprise everyone by beating the defending champions, Houston Dynamo, in the playoffs. He scored the first goal in a big 3-0 win in Houston. In 2009, he played in 27 league matches and scored 3 goals.

On March 20, 2010, Dane scored the third goal for the Red Bulls in a 3-1 win against Santos FC. This was a special game because it was the first match played at the new Red Bull Arena. On July 25, 2010, he scored a goal to help New York win 2-1 against Manchester City in a friendly game. On September 24, 2010, Dane played his 100th league match for New York. He helped his team win 2-0 against Los Angeles Galaxy by scoring the first goal and earning a penalty for the second. He finished his 2010 season strong, scoring five goals in his last seven matches. This helped New York win the Eastern Conference regular season title. In 2011, Dane had his best season yet, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists in 27 matches.

Time with Vancouver Whitecaps FC

On July 13, 2012, Dane Richards was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He scored his first goal for Vancouver against the San Jose Earthquakes on July 20, putting the Whitecaps ahead 1-0.

Moving to Burnley

On August 26, 2012, it was confirmed that Dane would join the English Championship team Burnley starting January 1, 2013. He played in an FA Cup game as a substitute. He also played in a Championship league game against Huddersfield. However, he found it hard to get used to the faster pace of the game in England. This was his last game for Burnley, and he was soon sent out on loan.

Later, Dane was released from his contract with Burnley. This allowed him to join the Norwegian team FK Bodø/Glimt permanently.

Playing for Bodø/Glimt

After struggling at Burnley, Dane Richards was loaned to the Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt on April 4, 2013. He played in 14 league games and scored 2 goals during his loan. In July 2013, he signed a permanent contract with the club. He helped Bodø/Glimt win the 2013 Adeccoligaen and get promoted to the top league in Norway. On April 13, 2014, Dane helped Bodø/Glimt get their first win of the Tippeligaen season. He scored a goal in a 4-2 comeback victory against Sogndal. Overall, he played 55 official games for Bodø/Glimt and scored ten goals.

Returning to New York Red Bulls

On March 7, 2015, it was announced that Dane Richards would rejoin the New York Red Bulls. He had spent the preseason trying out with the club. On November 30, 2015, the Red Bulls decided not to keep him, ending his second time with the club.

Loan to Indy Eleven

On July 10, 2015, the Red Bulls announced that Dane would be loaned to NASL team Indy Eleven for the rest of the season.

Time with Miami FC

On December 10, 2015, Dane Richards became the very first player signed by the new North American Soccer League team Miami FC. He left Miami in December 2016.

Coaching Career

In March 2017, Dane Richards became an assistant coach for the Austin Texans Soccer Club.

International Play for Jamaica

Dane Richards first played for the Jamaica national team in 2002 when he was just 18 years old. While he was still at Clemson, he returned to play for Jamaica in a 1-1 friendly game against the United States.

His great play in 2007 caught the attention of the Jamaica Football Federation. He was called up to the national team for friendly matches against El Salvador and Guatemala in Kingston. He played in both games, which Jamaica won. Dane also played in 2010 World Cup qualifying matches and was chosen for the 2008 Caribbean Championship. He played in all five matches, helping Jamaica win the 2008 Caribbean Championship. He also played in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

In 2010, Dane became a key player for the national team and started showing his strong attacking skills. On August 11, 2010, he scored his first goal for Jamaica in a 3-1 win against Trinidad and Tobago. On October 10, 2010, he scored his second international goal from a penalty kick, helping Jamaica win 1-0 against Trinidad and Tobago. Dane scored three goals for Jamaica in December 2010, leading them to another Caribbean Cup title. He also won the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer.
