Dane O'Brian Richards (born on December 14, 1983) is a former professional football player from Jamaica. He played as a winger, which means he played on the sides of the field to help attack. Most of his career was spent with the Major League Soccer team, New York Red Bulls.

Career
Early Life and College Soccer
Dane Richards started his football journey in Jamaica. He was part of the youth team for Jamaican National Premier League club Seba United. At the same time, he went to Cornwall College in Montego Bay. There, he helped his school win the DaCosta Cup and Olivier Shield, which are important school football competitions.
In 2003, Dane moved to the United States to play college soccer. He played for two years at San Jacinto College in Houston. He was an amazing scorer there, getting a record 45 goals in two years. In his second year, he scored 25 goals, which was a school record!

After San Jacinto, he went to Clemson University. In his junior year, he was the top scorer for the team with 12 goals and nine assists. He scored the winning goal in three big NCAA Tournament games. He also scored in a close game against New Mexico in the College Cup semifinals. In 2006, as a senior, he scored 11 goals and made nine assists in 19 games. Clemson lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament that year. Dane Richards was recognized as a second-team All-American player.
Playing Professionally
New York Red Bulls
In 2007, the New York Red Bulls chose Dane Richards in the second round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. He quickly became the main right winger for the team. On May 5, 2007, he scored his first goal in a Major League Soccer (MLS) game against Real Salt Lake. In his first MLS season, he played in 28 matches and started 27 of them. He scored two goals and made six assists. His assists total was the second highest on his team and the most among all new players in the league. Because of his great performance, he was one of three players nominated for the league's Rookie of the Year award.

In 2008, Dane played in 23 MLS games, scoring 3 goals and making 6 assists. He helped the Red Bulls surprise everyone by beating the defending champions, Houston Dynamo, in the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs. He scored the first goal in a big 3-0 win in Houston. He also earned a penalty kick and helped set up another goal. In 2009, he played in 27 league matches and scored 3 goals.
On March 20, 2010, Dane scored the third goal for the Red Bulls in a 3-1 win against Santos FC. This was a special game because it was the first ever played at the new Red Bull Arena. On July 25, 2010, he scored a goal in a friendly match, helping New York beat Manchester City 2-1. On September 24, 2010, Dane played in his 100th league match for New York. He helped his team win 2-0 against Los Angeles Galaxy by scoring the first goal and earning a penalty kick for the second. He finished his 2010 season strong, scoring five goals in his last seven games. This helped New York win the Eastern Conference regular season title. In 2011, Dane had his best season yet, scoring seven goals and making seven assists in 27 matches.
Moving to Vancouver
On July 13, 2012, Dane Richards was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC. In return, the Red Bulls received another player, Sébastien Le Toux, and some money. When he left, Dane was second on New York's all-time MLS list for games played, games started, and minutes played. He was also third in assists. He scored his first goal for Vancouver against the San Jose Earthquakes on July 20, putting the Whitecaps ahead 1-0.
Time in England and Norway
On August 26, 2012, it was announced that Dane Richards would join the English team Burnley on January 1, 2013. This move happened after the MLS season ended and during the European transfer window. He played one game as a substitute in an FA Cup match. Then, he got another chance in a league game against Huddersfield. However, he found it hard to get used to the faster pace of the game in England. This was his last game for Burnley, and he was soon sent out on loan.
After his loan, Burnley let Dane go from his contract. This allowed him to join the Norwegian team FK Bodø/Glimt permanently.
Back to New York and Other Teams
After his time with Burnley, Dane was loaned to the Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt on April 4, 2013. He played in 14 league games and scored 2 goals during his loan. In July 2013, he signed a permanent contract with Bodø/Glimt. He helped the club win the 2013 Adeccoligaen and move up to the top league in Norway. On April 13, 2014, Dane helped Bodø/Glimt get their first win of the Tippeligaen season. He scored a goal in a comeback 4-2 victory. He played a total of 55 official games for Bodø/Glimt and scored ten goals.
On March 7, 2015, it was announced that Dane Richards would return to the New York Red Bulls. He had been trying out with the team during the preseason. On November 30, 2015, the Red Bulls decided not to keep him, ending his second time with the club.
On July 10, 2015, the Red Bulls loaned Dane to NASL team Indy Eleven for the rest of the season.
On December 10, 2015, Dane Richards became the very first player to sign for the new North American Soccer League team, Miami FC. He left Miami in December 2016.
Coaching Career
In March 2017, Dane Richards started a new chapter in his career. He became an assistant coach for the Austin Texans Soccer Club.
Playing for Jamaica
Dane Richards first played for the Jamaica national team in 2002 when he was just 18 years old. While he was still at Clemson University, he returned to play for Jamaica in a friendly game against the United States. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
His good play in 2007 caught the attention of the Jamaica Football Federation. He was called up to play for the national team in friendly matches against El Salvador and Guatemala in Kingston. Jamaica won both of these games. Dane also played in games to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. He was chosen for the 2008 Caribbean Championship. He played in all five matches, helping Jamaica win the 2008 Caribbean Championship. Dane also played in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In 2010, he became a regular player for the national team and started showing off his strong attacking skills. On August 11, 2010, Dane scored his first goal for Jamaica in a 3-1 win against Trinidad and Tobago. On October 10, 2010, he scored his second international goal from a penalty kick, helping Jamaica win 1-0 against Trinidad and Tobago. In December 2010, Dane scored three goals for Jamaica, leading them to another Caribbean Cup title. He also won the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer.
