Early Life and First Performances
When Dani Stevenson was 12 years old, she moved from her home in Atlanta, Georgia, to Harlem, New York. In Harlem, she dreamed of becoming a professional singer. She started by singing the national anthem at her junior high graduation and performing in local talent shows.
In 1998, she began performing at open mic nights in Greenwich Village. An open mic is an event where anyone can get up on stage and perform. This helped her gain experience and get noticed.
Music Career
Getting a Record Deal
In 2001, Stevenson met a music producer named Rhemario Webber. Together, they created a demo, which is a short collection of songs used to show a record label what an artist can do. Their 10-song demo was a success. In 2002, she was offered a contract with Universal Records.
Soon after signing, the record label asked her to sing on Nelly's new song, "Hot in Herre". She worked with Nelly and producer Pharrell Williams. Stevenson said the recording was very fast and only took about 15 minutes to complete.
Working on Her First Album
After "Hot in Herre" became a huge hit, Universal Records told Stevenson she could start working on her own album. She and Webber wrote 11 of the 13 songs for the album, which was going to be called Is There Another?!.
The album's first single, "Honk Your Horn", was produced by Missy Elliott and came out in 2002. Another song, "Yo, Yo, Yo", was featured on the soundtrack for the movie XXX. It was released as her second single in 2003.
Even though she released singles, her album's release date was pushed back. Because the singles didn't become major hits on the Billboard music charts, Stevenson and Universal Records decided to part ways in 2004. Her album Is There Another?! was never released.
Later Work and Collaborations
Even without a major record label, Stevenson continued to make music. In 2010, she signed with a new company, Starrlet Entertainment, and released the single "Wishing Well".
She also worked with other famous artists. In 2011, she collaborated with the rapper DMX on the song "Tell Ya Friends". The next year, she was a featured artist on DMX's album Undisputed on the track "... for Love".
