Dans Mountain is a cool mountain located in Allegany County, Maryland, USA. It sits between Georges Creek and the North Branch Potomac River. The very top of Dans Mountain is called Dan's Rock. It reaches about 2,895 feet (882 meters) high! This makes it the highest point in Allegany County.
Even though some other spots in Maryland are taller, Dans Mountain has a really impressive steep slope. This big slope is like a giant natural wall. It is part of an even larger one called the Allegheny Front, which stretches into Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Dans Mountain State Park
Dans Mountain State Park is a fun place to visit. It stretches for about 16 miles (26 km) along the mountain. The park is located about 9 miles (14 km) south of Frostburg, Maryland.
The highest point in the park is Dan's Rock Overlook. From here, you can see amazing views of the area. The park also has a pond where you can fish. It is stocked with fish every year. There is also a big swimming pool and places to buy snacks.
Dan's Mountain Wildlife Area
The Dan's Mountain Wildlife Management Area helps protect the mountain's wild spaces. This area covers a huge 9,504 acres (3,846 hectares). It helps keep the mountain's animals and plants safe.
How Dans Mountain Got Its Name
Dans Mountain is named after a brave early settler named Daniel Cresap. He was the son of Thomas Cresap. Daniel was one of the first people to settle in Allegany County.
Daniel Cresap was known for being very adventurous. He often went hunting with a Delaware Indian friend named Nemacolin. One day, Daniel was chasing a bear up a tree. He fell and was knocked out. Nemacolin found him and safely brought Daniel home. After this event, the mountain became known as Dans Mountain.
