David William Sime was an amazing American athlete who was great at many sports. He was especially known as a fast runner, called a sprinter. Later in life, he became a special eye doctor, an ophthalmologist. Dave won a silver medal in the 100-meter race at the 1960 Olympic Games. He also set several running records in the late 1950s.

Early Life of Dave Sime

Dave Sime was born on July 25, 1936, in Paterson, New Jersey. He grew up in Fair Lawn. In high school, he played football and baseball. Interestingly, he did not run track at all during his high school years.

Dave wanted to become a pilot and applied to the United States Military Academy. However, he found out he was color blind. This meant he could not become a pilot. Instead, he accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Duke University in North Carolina.

Dave Sime's Time at Duke University

At Duke, Dave Sime was part of the baseball and track and field teams. He even played football for one season in 1958. His journey into track was quite unexpected. One day, he ran 100 yards in baseball shoes on grass in a very fast 9.8 seconds!

His coaches quickly noticed his speed and asked him to join the track team. Dave had planned to keep playing baseball, but his success in track changed his mind. His coaches saw his amazing speed and knew he had the potential to go to the Olympics.

College Achievements

Dave's biggest college win happened when he was just 19 years old. This was at the Drake Relays in April 1956. He set a new record in the 100-yard dash, finishing in 9.4 seconds. He even beat Bobby Morrow, who had won over thirty 100-yard races before.

Dave was named the best athlete of the meet. In 1959, he was added to the Drake Relays Athlete Hall of Fame. In 1956, he was also named the ACC Athlete of the Year for his great work in both track and baseball.

Dave was chosen by the Detroit Lions in the 1959 NFL Draft. But he decided not to play professional football. He chose to continue his studies in medical school instead. In 2010, Duke University called him their most outstanding athlete of the 20th century.

Dave Sime could not compete in the 1956 Olympics because of a leg injury. But four years later, he competed in the Rome Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 100-meter race. He was just barely beaten by Armin Hary from Germany in a very close finish.

He also ran the last part of the U.S. team's 4 × 100 m relay race. The team finished first and set a new world record. However, they were later disqualified. This happened because one of the runners started too early during a hand-off.

During his running career, Dave held world records in several races. These included the 100 yards, 220 yards, and the 220-yard low hurdles.

Dave Sime's Career as an Eye Doctor

Dave Sime never played sports professionally. He chose to focus on his medical studies. He graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine as one of the top students.

After medical school, he became an ophthalmologist, which is a doctor who specializes in eye care. He practiced medicine in Florida. He was a leader in using intraocular lens transplants, which are special lenses put into the eye to help people see better.

Dave Sime's Family Life

Dave Sime had three children. His oldest daughter, Sherrie, was a top tennis player at the University of Virginia. His son, Scott, was a wrestling champion and football player in high school. Scott also went to Duke University, like his father.

Dave's youngest child, Lisa, went to Stanford University. She was an excellent soccer player there. At Stanford, she met her future husband, Ed McCaffrey. Ed was a football player who later won three Super Bowls in the NFL.

Dave's grandsons, Max McCaffrey and Christian McCaffrey, also became involved in American football. Max is a coach and former wide receiver. Christian is a running back in the NFL. Dave Sime passed away in 2016 at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer.
