The town of Davenport was created in 1817. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Kortright and Meredith. Davenport got its name from an early settler, John Davenport. He was also the very first leader of the town.

The northern edge of Davenport touches the border of Otsego County. The town covers about 51.9 square miles (134.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
