His Early Life and Journey
David Alliance was born Davoud Alliance in Kashan, Iran, on June 15, 1932. He started working in the markets of Iran when he was just 14 years old. This early start taught him a lot about business. By the time he was 18, he moved to Manchester, England. There, he built a new life and a very successful career.
Recognitions and Titles
Lord Alliance received many special honours for his work. In 1984, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This is a high award given by the British monarch for great achievements. In 1989, he received a knighthood, which meant he could be called "Sir David Alliance."
In 2004, he became a life peer. This meant he was given the title of Baron Alliance, of Manchester. As a Baron, he became a member of the House of Lords. He served there, representing the Liberal Democrats party, until he retired in March 2025.
Building Businesses
Lord Alliance was a key figure in the business world. He was the chairman of N Brown Group plc, a company that sells clothes. He also helped start Coats Viyella plc, which is now called Coats Group plc. This company operates in many countries around the world. It employed thousands of people and became a very large textile business. Lord Alliance also invested in new technology companies, like SimilarWeb.
He used his business skills to help others. He served on many important groups, like the Prince's Youth Business Trust. This trust helps young people start their own businesses. He also supported universities, including the University of Manchester and Weizmann Institute. He received special honorary degrees from several universities for his contributions.
One of his most notable achievements was helping to rescue Ethiopian Jews. Between 1984 and 1991, he played a big part in helping them move from Sudan and Ethiopia to Israel.
Giving Back to the Community
Lord Alliance was a generous person who believed in giving back. He used his wealth to support many good causes. For example, he made donations to the Liberal Democrats party to support their work.
He also supported education in a big way. In 2012, Tel Aviv University opened a special center for Iranian Studies, named after Lord Alliance. In 2015, the Manchester Business School was renamed the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS). This was done to honour Lord Alliance and his family for their large donation. This donation helped the school grow and improve.
About His Life
Lord Alliance wrote a book about his life called A Bazaar Life. It was published in 2015. He had three children and eight grandchildren. He divided his time between his homes in Manchester and London. Lord Alliance passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 93.
