David L. Brewer (born May 19, 1946) is a retired Vice Admiral from the United States Navy. He also served as the superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Admiral Brewer spent 35 years in the Navy. He was the captain of the USS Mount Whitney from 1991 to 1992. Later, he led the Military Sealift Command from 2001 until he retired in 2006. Before that, he was the Vice Chief of Naval Education and Training from 1999 to 2001.

While working in naval education, he helped create the Navy College Program. He also made deals with 11 colleges and universities. These deals allowed over 300,000 sailors to earn college degrees. As the head of Military Sealift Command, he managed a huge operation. This operation moved a lot of equipment for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also led the command's efforts to help after Hurricane Katrina.

Early Life and Navy Career

David Brewer was born in Farmville, Virginia, on May 19, 1946. His parents were David L. Brewer, Jr., and Mildred S. Brewer. When he was five, his family moved to Florida. He went to school in Orlando, Florida.

He started his Navy career in 1970. He was part of the first group to graduate from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at Prairie View A&M University. This was a special program at a historically Black university. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Prairie View A&M. Later, he earned a Master of Arts degree from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

Admiral Brewer held important leadership roles in the Navy. He commanded Naval Forces Marianas. He also led Amphibious Group 3 in San Diego, California. After that, he became Vice Chief of Naval Education and Training in Pensacola, Florida. Finally, he commanded the Military Sealift Command in Washington, D.C..

After the Navy: Leading Schools

In October 2006, David Brewer was chosen to lead the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This is the second-largest school district in the United States. It has over 700,000 students and 800 schools. It also has 77,000 employees and a large budget.

Brewer served as superintendent until December 2008. During his time, the number of students dropping out of school went down. The dropout rate for the 2007–08 school year was 26.4%. This was a big improvement from the previous year's 31.7%. This was one of the biggest improvements in California.

After leaving LAUSD, Brewer started The David and Mildred Brewer Foundation. This foundation gives scholarships to African American students. It is named after his mother, a retired teacher, and his father, who taught for over 33 years.

Personal Life

David Brewer is married to Richardene "Deanie" Brewer. She has a doctorate degree in educational leadership. Dr. Brewer has taught English for over 20 years. She has taught at middle schools, high schools, and colleges. She has also taught in different places, including Virginia, San Diego, England, and Guam.

Their daughter, Stacey, graduated from Hampton University in 2002. She then earned her law degree from Pennsylvania State's Dickinson School of Law in 2005. She lives in Centreville, Virginia.
