David L. Brewer (born May 19, 1946) is a retired Vice Admiral from the United States Navy. A Vice Admiral is a very high rank in the Navy. He also served as the superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District. This is one of the largest school districts in the United States.

Admiral Brewer served in the Navy for 35 years. He commanded the ship USS Mount Whitney from 1991 to 1992. Later, he led the Military Sealift Command from 2001 to 2006. This command helps move supplies and equipment for the military. From 1999 to 2001, he was the Vice Chief of Naval Education and Training. In this role, he helped create the Navy College Program. This program allowed over 300,000 sailors to earn college degrees.

As Commander of Military Sealift Command, Admiral Brewer played a big part in supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. His team moved a huge amount of equipment to the Persian Gulf. This was done in less than four months. He also led the Military Sealift Command's efforts to help after Hurricane Katrina. This showed his leadership in times of disaster.

His other important Navy jobs included leading Naval Forces Marianas. He also commanded Amphibious Group 3 in San Diego, California.

Early Life and Education

David Brewer was born in Farmville, Virginia. His parents were David L. Brewer, Jr., and Mildred S. Brewer. His Navy career started in 1970. He became an ensign, which is a junior officer rank.

He was part of the first group to graduate from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at Prairie View A&M University. This was a special program at a historically black university. When he was five, his family moved to Florida. He went to school in Orlando, Florida.

Brewer earned a degree in biology from Prairie View A&M University. He also studied at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. There, he earned a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Leading Schools in Los Angeles

After his Navy career, David Brewer became a leader in education. In October 2006, he was chosen to be the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This is the second-largest school district in the U.S. It has over 700,000 students and 800 schools.

Brewer led the LAUSD until December 2008. During his time, the dropout rate in the district improved a lot. The dropout rate for the 2007–08 school year went down by almost 17%. This was one of the biggest improvements in California. Brewer gave credit to the teachers and principals for this success.

Today, Brewer leads The David and Mildred Brewer Foundation. This foundation gives scholarships to African American students. It is named after his mother, a retired teacher, and his late father, who taught for over 33 years.

Family Life

David Brewer is married to Richardene "Deanie" Brewer. She has a doctorate degree in educational leadership. Dr. Brewer has taught English education for over 20 years. She has taught in Virginia, San Diego, England, and Guam. She has worked with middle school, high school, and college students.

Their daughter, Stacey, graduated from Hampton University in 2002. She later earned her law degree from Pennsylvania State's Dickinson School of Law in 2005. She lives in Centreville, Virginia.
