David Anthony Mack (born May 30, 1961) is a former professional runner and a former officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). He was involved in a serious incident related to a bank. Mack was arrested in December 1997 for taking a large sum of money, $722,000, from a Bank of America branch in South Central Los Angeles. He was later released on May 14, 2010.

Early Life and Athletic Career
David Mack was a talented athlete from a young age. He ran track for Locke High School. He became a champion at the CIF California State Meet in the 880 yards event for two years in a row.
College Track Star
Mack attended the University of Oregon where he continued his track career. He ran alongside his high school rival, Jeff West. Even though West later moved to UCLA, Mack decided to stay at the University of Oregon. His coach, Bill Dellinger, convinced him to remain.
While in college, Mack was a very successful runner. In 1980, as a freshman, he finished sixth in the Olympic Trials. He won three Pac-10 conference titles in the 800 meters. In his junior year, he won the NCAA Division I Championship in the 800 meters.
Professional Running Achievements
As a professional runner, David Mack competed for the Santa Monica Track Club. He was part of the United States national team. He ran the 800 meters in the 1983 World Championships in Athletics.
In 1985, he achieved a personal best time of 1:43.35 seconds in the 800 meters. At that time, this was the second fastest time ever by an American runner. It still ranks among the fastest times. His last professional race was in 1988.
Bank Incident
In November 1997, David Mack entered a Bank of America branch. He took $722,000 from the bank's vault. An investigation followed this event. After about a month, a person involved in the incident admitted their role. This led to Mack's arrest in December 1997.
Mack was released from prison on May 14, 2010. The location of the money taken from the bank has never been revealed.
