Dayahang Rai (Nepali: दयाहाङ् राई; born 13 April 1980) is a famous Nepalese actor, director, and playwright. He is one of the most popular actors in Nepal. He has starred in over 50 films and is a leading actor today. Dayahang has won many awards for his acting. He started as a theatre actor before moving to Nepali movies.
Dayahang became well-known from TV shows like Yuva, Dalan, and Hamro Team. His first movie was Anagarik (2006). The film Dasdhunga (2010) was quite successful. But Loot (2012) was a huge hit and changed his career. Since then, he has been in many successful films. These include Kabaddi (2013) and its follow-ups Kabaddi Kabaddi (2015) and Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi(2019). Other popular movies are Talakjung vs Tulke (2014), Woda Number 6 (2015), and Loot 2 (2017). The movie White Sun (2016), which he starred in, was the first Nepali movie to be considered for the Academy Awards.
Dayahang Rai has won many awards. He has received three National Awards. He won for best supporting actor in 2009 for Dasdhunga. He also won best actor in 2015 for Sambodhan and in 2016 for Kabaddi Kabaddi.

Early Life and Dreams
Dayahang Rai was born on April 13, 1980. He grew up in Khawa, a village in the Bhojpur district of Eastern Nepal. His parents are Tilak Ram Rai and Chandra Devi Rai. He is the middle child in his family. He has two younger sisters and an older brother. His family belongs to the Bantawa Rai people, who are part of the Kirat group in Nepal.
Dayahang finished his early schooling in Khawa. He then went to Annapurna Secondary School in Dilpa, Bhojpur, graduating in 1998. He studied Geography at Bhojpur Multiple College. In 2001, he moved to Kathmandu. There, he studied Journalism at The Ratna Rajya Campus.
When Dayahang was a child, his mother often told him fairy tales. These stories really sparked his imagination. He was interested in acting from a very young age. He enjoyed being in school plays. Dayahang realized his true passion was not in his studies. So, he decided to follow his dream of becoming an actor in theatre and on stage.

Dayahang Rai has had a very successful acting career. He started in theatre and then moved to television and movies.
Theatre Work
Dayahang acted in the play Talakjung vs Tulke. After this, he joined Actors’ Studio in 2007. This was a place for theatre artists in Nepal. Today, he is part of Mandala Theatre, Nepal. He helped start this theatre group with Rajan Khatiwada and Dhiren Raja (Limbu).
Movies and TV Shows
Dayahang's first TV role was in Yuwa. He then appeared in Dalan, a series directed by Nabin Subba in 2003. This show was shown on Nepal Television in 2009.
His first main role in a big movie was in Anagarik (2006). This film was directed by Ram Babu Gurung. It won two awards at the Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival. Dayahang then starred in the romantic movie Mero Euta Saathi Chha (2009). He gained a lot of attention for his role in Dasdhunga (2009). For this movie, he won his first National Award for best supporting actor. He also acted in Acharya (2010) and Mero Love Story in 2010.
In 2012, Dayahang was in the very popular Nepali film Loot. He also helped write the dialogues for this movie. His character, Gofle, was loved by both critics and audiences. The 2013 film Chhadke brought Dayahang together with other well-known Nepali actors. Badhshala (2013) was one of Dayahang's films about the Nepalese Civil War. This movie was banned because the Nepali army had objections. In Karkash, released in 2013, Dayahang played a drummer in a struggling music band. He had a small but important role in the highly praised film Saanghuro (2013). Dayahang and Aryan Sigdel starred in the thriller Loafer in 2013. Mukhauta (2013) was a movie with many stars, including Dayahang and other famous Nepali actors.
Dayahang's two films Kabaddi (2013) and its sequel Kabaddi Kabaddi (2015) were huge hits in Nepal and other countries. He won his third National Award for best actor for Kabaddi Kabaddi. In 2014, Dayahang worked with Priyanka Karki in the successful movie Jhole. Dayahang won his second National Award for best actor for the film Sambodhan (2014). The highly praised Talakjung vs Tulke (2014) showed how good Dayahang was as an actor. It was set during the Nepali Civil War. In 2015, Dayahang acted in Fanko, another well-received film.
In 2016, Dayahang starred in the acclaimed film White Sun (Seto Surya). This movie was also about the civil war in Nepal. It was Nepal's entry for the 2018 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Dayahang also acted in the Ram Babu Gurung film Purano Dunga (2016), which was a big success. The sequel to Loot was released in 2017 as Loot 2, with Dayahang returning as Gofle. Dayahang worked with Keki Adhikari in Ghampani in 2017, which was a commercial success and received good reviews. In the action thriller Lappan Chhappan (2017), Dayahang played a police officer. In Taandro (2017), Dayahang acted in his fourth film about Nepal's civil war, which was highly praised.
Personal Life
Dayahang Rai is married to Benuka Rai, a Nepali singer. They got married in 2006. They have two sons named Samduhang Rai and Sinchunghang Rai.
