Dayton is a small community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather a collection of homes and businesses. You can find Dayton southwest of Baltimore and north of Washington, D.C.. It sits right between the towns of Clarksville and Glenelg.

Discovering Dayton's Past
Dayton has a long history, dating back to before the American Civil War.
Early Days and Growth
A post office opened in Dayton on July 21, 1864. It has been open ever since, except for short times during the Civil War. By 1878, Dayton was growing. It had three general stores and a shop where people fixed wagon wheels.
One of these old stores was Maloney's General Store. It was built soon after the Civil War. This store was a busy stop for stagecoaches traveling through the area. Over the years, different families owned the store, including the Harp, Isaacs, White, and Grant families.
Schools in Dayton
Dayton also had a single-room school house on Green Bridge Road. This was a common type of school where all grades learned together in one room.
Later, a new school was built for African American children. It was a brown tile two-room school located at the crossroads of Ten Oaks, Green Bridge, and Howard roads. After this new school was built, the African American children moved there. The old school building for white children was then used by other students. Today, the two-room school building is owned by RLO Contractors.
