De Smet (pronounced "də SMET" or "dez MET") is a small community in Idaho, United States. It is a census-designated place, which means it's a special area defined by the government for gathering population data. De Smet is located in Benewah County, within the Coeur d'Alene Reservation.

De Smet is a quiet place. U.S. Route 95, a major highway, runs close by. The community is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of a town called Tensed. A creek named Latah Creek flows between these two communities.

A Look at De Smet's History

De Smet was named after a Belgian Catholic priest named Pierre-Jean De Smet. He was a Jesuit missionary in the 1800s. Father De Smet spent most of his life working with Native American peoples in western North America. This included the Coeur d'Alène tribe, who live in the area. He would sometimes return to his home base in St. Louis, Missouri.

The population of De Smet has changed over time. In 1909, about 200 people lived there. By 1960, the population was 100. In 2010, it was 175, and in 2020, it was 145.
