Deadwood is a small community known as a hamlet in Alberta, Canada. It is located within the County of Northern Lights. You can find Deadwood on Highway 690. It's about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of the Mackenzie Highway (Highway 35). The hamlet is also about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Peace River and 34 kilometers (21 miles) southeast of Manning.

History of Deadwood

The first postmaster and owner of the general store in Deadwood was John Chauncey Eggenberger. He came from a town also named Deadwood in South Dakota, USA. It is believed that he named this Canadian hamlet after his hometown. The original store, post office, and community hall were first located a few miles west of where the hamlet is today.

Population of Deadwood

In 1991, a count of the population was done by Statistics Canada. This count showed that 22 people lived in Deadwood at that time.

What You Can Find in Deadwood

Deadwood has several important places for its community members. These include a community hall, which is a place for gatherings, and a baseball diamond for sports. There is also a post office and a small store. These two, along with a pool room, are all located inside the building that used to be the Deadwood School.

The Deadwood United Church is still active and holds services. In the past, Deadwood also had a service station and a blacksmith shop. There was even at least one other church. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Deadwood had many baseball teams. They played in the Mackenzie Highway Baseball League against other teams in the area.

Annual Events in Deadwood

The community of Deadwood hosts several fun events each year:

  • "Deadwood Days" This summer event often includes a softball tournament. Sometimes, there's also a parade and a small fair.
  • "The Fall Supper" Like many rural communities in North America, Deadwood holds a Fall Supper. This event usually takes place in late October at the community hall.
  • "Deadwood Talent Night" This event happens in the spring at the community hall. It's a chance for people from the Manning-Deadwood and Dixonville areas to show off their unique talents.
