The County of Northern Lights is a special kind of local government area. It is called a municipal district. You can find it in northwest Alberta, Canada.

It is part of Census Division 17. The main office for the county government is in the town of Manning.

This area used to be called the Municipal District (M.D.) of Northern Lights No. 22. But on February 3, 2010, the government of Alberta officially changed its name. Now it is known as the County of Northern Lights.

The County was officially created on April 1, 1995. Before that, it was known as Improvement District No. 22.

How Many People Live Here?

In 2021, a count of people called a census was done. This count showed that 4,152 people lived in the County of Northern Lights. These people lived in 1,559 homes.

This number was a little less than in 2016. In 2016, there were 4,200 people living here. The County covers a large area of 20,627.02 square kilometers (about 7,964 square miles). This means there are not many people per square kilometer.

The 2016 census also counted the people in the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement. This settlement is inside the County's area but is managed separately. In 2016, 544 people lived in the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement.
