Dean Geyer's Early Life

Dean Geyer was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the oldest of three children. His father, Keith Geyer, is a master in JKA Karate. He even appeared in two South African films, Kill or Be Killed and Kill and Kill Again. Dean's two younger sisters, Jess and Tatum, also enjoy martial arts.

Dean's love for music started when he was very young. He learned to play the guitar. He wrote his first song, "Change," about moving from South Africa to Australia. When he went to school in Melbourne, Australia, he attended Melbourne High School. This was a special school for boys in South Yarra, Victoria.

When Dean auditioned for Australian Idol, he sang his own song called "Nice to Meet You." In 2004, Dean started a band named "Third Edge." They recorded their music at Studio 52. Dean Geyer's Career Journey

Dean Geyer tried out for the fourth season of Australian Idol in Melbourne. He sang "Walking In Memphis" by Marc Cohn. Then, he performed his own song, "Nice to Meet You." All three judges loved his song and voted for him to move on to the Top 100.

Australian Idol Success

Dean made it through the next rounds in Sydney, where the Top 100 became the Top 24. He sang "I Don't Wanna Be" by Gavin DeGraw. Later, he performed the U2 hit "Beautiful Day" with Chris Murphy. They became good friends and impressed the judges. Dean was one of the first contestants to reach the Top 12.

On October 15, Dean's performance of "On the Way Down" by Ryan Cabrera earned a "touchdown" from judge Mark Holden. During the "Disco" themed show, Dean did a front handspring and a backflip. Many people, including former Idol judges, thought Dean might win the competition.

On November 12, Dean got another "Touchdown" from Mark Holden for his song "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. Even though Dean was very popular, he was voted off the show on November 13. He finished third, behind Jessica Mauboy and the winner, Damien Leith.
