Decatur is a small village located in Burt County, Nebraska, in the United States. It sits right next to the Missouri River. In 2010, about 481 people lived there. The village is named after Stephen Decatur, one of the people who helped start it. It grew up around a trading post that was set up by Colonel Peter Sarpy.

History of Decatur

For a very long time, the Omaha Native Americans lived in this area. They built their homes along the creeks and the river. In 1804, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through here. They were on their big journey to explore the land bought in the Louisiana Purchase.

The first European settler in this area was a man named Woods. He settled near a creek in 1837, which was later named Wood Creek after him. Stephen Decatur arrived in 1841. He was a former schoolteacher from New Jersey. He started a farm called Decatur Springs, named after a spring that gave water to the village for many years.

In 1854, the U.S. government bought a large area of land from the Omaha people. This land included the spot where Decatur is now. The town of Decatur was officially started in 1856. It was first called "The Decatur Townsite & Ferry Company." Peter Sarpy helped plan the town. It grew around his trading post, where he traded with Native Americans.

The official papers for the town were approved in 1862. After the first company ended, the town was renamed Decatur Village in 1858.
