What is the History of Decatur, Iowa?

Decatur was once the main town (called the county seat) for Decatur County. But in 1853, that title moved to Leon.

Decatur officially became a city in 1875.

For a long time, people called the city both 'Decatur' and 'Decatur City'. In 2023, the city council held a vote to make the name official. Now, it's officially known as the City of Decatur.

Decatur is located in Iowa. It's near Iowa Highway 2 and I-35. The city is about 4.5 miles west of Leon. It's also about eight miles north of Lamoni.
