Dedryck Anga Boyata (born 28 November 1990) is a professional footballer from Belgium. He usually plays as a defender, either in the centre or on the right side.

Dedryck started his senior career with Manchester City in 2010. He was even named their Young Player of the Year for the 2009–10 season! Later, he played for other clubs like Bolton Wanderers and FC Twente on loan. In 2015, he moved to Celtic in Scotland. After that, he joined Hertha BSC in Germany and then Club Brugge in Belgium.

Boyata has also played for Belgium's national teams, both youth and senior. He made his first appearance for the senior team in 2010. He was part of the Belgian squad that won third place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Playing Career: A Journey Through Clubs

Starting Out in Belgium

Dedryck Boyata was born in Uccle, Belgium. He began his football journey in the youth team at Brussels. In 2006, he moved to England to join Manchester City. He was a key player in City's youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2008. He even won the Academy Player of the Month award in April 2009. His talent led him to train with the senior team in the 2009–10 season.

Time at Manchester City

Boyata made his first team debut for Manchester City on 2 January 2010. This was in an FA Cup match against Middlesbrough. He played as a centre-back and helped his team win 1–0. His first Premier League game was nine days later against Blackburn Rovers.

In the 2010–11 season, he scored his first goal for the club. It was in a Europa League play-off match. He also played well against Chelsea, helping City keep a clean sheet. He played 17 games that season and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in 2011.

Loan Spells: Gaining Experience

To get more playing time, Boyata went on loan to other clubs.

  • Bolton Wanderers: On 26 August 2011, he joined Bolton Wanderers for a season. He scored his first goal for Bolton against Chelsea on 2 October 2011. An ankle injury kept him out for six weeks, but he returned to play.
  • FC Twente: On 31 August 2012, Boyata moved to the Dutch club FC Twente on a short loan. He played 8 games for them before returning to Manchester City in January 2013.

Back at Manchester City

Boyata played for Manchester City again in September 2013, in a League Cup match. He helped his team win 5–0. In January 2014, he was sent off in an FA Cup game. Even though Manchester City won the Premier League in 2013–14, Boyata didn't play enough league games to get a winner's medal. He signed a new contract until 2016. In his final season, he played six games for City.

Moving to Celtic

Dedryck Boyata joined Scottish Premiership champions Celtic on 2 June 2015. He signed a four-year contract for about £1.5 million.

He scored in his first game for Celtic on 15 July, in a Champions League qualifier. He also scored a winning goal two weeks later in another qualifier. However, Celtic's defense struggled that season, and Boyata faced some criticism.

In the 2016–17 season, Boyata worked hard to improve. He started playing regularly again in November 2016. He scored two goals in his next three league games, both from headers. He followed advice from his manager, Brendan Rodgers, to play simply and effectively.

Time at Hertha BSC

In May 2019, Boyata moved to Hertha BSC in Germany for free. He made his debut on 14 September. He scored his first goal for Hertha on 29 September in a 4–0 win. Before the 2020–21 season, Boyata became the team captain for Hertha.

Joining Club Brugge

On 22 August 2022, Boyata signed a three-year contract with Belgian First Division A team Club Brugge. He left the club by agreement on 3 January 2025.

He was called up again in October 2015 for Euro 2016 qualifiers. He played his second game for Belgium in March 2016.

In May 2018, he was chosen for Belgium's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in all of Belgium's group stage games. Belgium finished third in the tournament, which was a great achievement! In June 2021, Boyata was also part of Belgium's squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He played two games in that tournament.
