Dedryck Boyata's Football Journey
Starting Out in Belgium
Dedryck Boyata was born in Uccle, a town in Belgium. He began his football journey in the youth team at Brussels. In 2006, he moved to England to join Manchester City.
He was a key player in City's youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2008. He played in both final matches against Chelsea. His strong performances earned him the Academy Player of the Month award in April 2009. He was one of seven young players who started training with the senior team in the 2009–10 season.
Time at Manchester City
Dedryck Boyata made his first team debut for Manchester City on January 2, 2010. This was in an FA Cup match against Middlesbrough. He played as a centre-back and helped his team win 1–0.
His first league game was against Blackburn Rovers nine days later. He came on as a substitute in a 4–1 win. He started his first Premier League game on February 6 against Hull City. For his great efforts in the League Cup semi-final against Manchester United, he was named Manchester City's Young Player of the Year for the 2009–10 season.
First Goal and Challenges
In the 2010–11 season, Boyata scored his first goal for Manchester City. It was in a Europa League play-off match against FC Timişoara on August 26. He continued to play well and even started against Chelsea on September 25. City won that game 1–0, keeping a clean sheet.
However, he received a red card early in a match against Arsenal on October 24. He played in 17 games that season. He was also a substitute when Manchester City won the FA Cup in 2011. After this, Boyata spent the next two seasons playing for other clubs on loan.
Loan Spells Away
On August 26, 2011, Boyata joined Bolton Wanderers on loan for a season. He played his first game for Bolton on September 10 against Manchester United. On October 2, 2011, he scored his first goal for Bolton against Chelsea.
He got an ankle injury in October, which meant he returned to Manchester City for treatment. He came back to play for Bolton in December. On August 31, 2012, Boyata moved to the Dutch club FC Twente on a short loan. He played 8 games for them before returning to Manchester City in January 2013.
Back at Manchester City
Boyata played for Manchester City again on September 24, 2013, in a League Cup match against Wigan Athletic. He helped his team win 5–0 and keep a clean sheet. On January 4, 2014, he was sent off in an FA Cup game against Blackburn Rovers.
Manchester City won the Premier League in 2013–14. However, Boyata did not get a medal because he only played one league game that season. In May, he signed a new contract to stay at the club until 2016. In his final season, he played six games for City.
Joining Celtic in Scotland
Dedryck Boyata signed a four-year contract with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic on June 2, 2015. The transfer fee was about £1.5 million.
He played his first game for Celtic on July 15 in a Champions League qualifier. He scored the first goal in a 2–0 win. Two weeks later, he scored the winning goal against Qarabağ FK. However, Celtic's defense struggled that season, and they did not qualify for the Champions League. Boyata received some criticism for his performances.
At the start of the 2016–17 season, Boyata was not playing much. But he worked hard to improve his fitness. His first game of the season was on November 18, 2016, in a 1–0 win against Kilmarnock. He scored two goals in his next three league games, both from headers. Boyata became a regular player again, following advice from his manager, Brendan Rodgers.
Moving to Hertha BSC
In May 2019, Boyata joined Hertha BSC in Germany on a free transfer. He played his first game for them on September 14, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 loss to Mainz 05. Boyata scored his first goal for Hertha on September 29 in a 4–0 win against 1. FC Köln.
Before the 2020–21 season, Boyata became the captain of Hertha BSC.
Time at Club Brugge
On August 22, 2022, Boyata signed a three-year contract with Belgian First Division A team Club Brugge.
He was not included in Brugge's squad for the 2024–25 Champions League. This meant he missed the chance to play against his former team, Celtic, in the group stage. On January 3, 2025, he left Club Brugge by agreement.
Playing for Belgium
Youth National Teams
Boyata played 12 matches for the Belgium under-19 team, scoring two goals. He made his debut for the Belgium U21 team on March 3, 2010, in a 1–0 win against Malta. Five months later, he was called up to the senior national team for the first time.
Senior National Team

Belgium's manager, Georges Leekens, chose Boyata for two Euro 2012 qualifying games in late 2010. He made his senior debut against Austria on October 10, 2010. He came on as a substitute in a 4–4 draw.
He was called up again in October 2015 for Euro 2016 qualifiers. He earned his second cap (national team appearance) in a friendly match against Portugal on March 29, 2016.
In May 2018, he was named in Belgium’s team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Boyata played every minute of Belgium's group stage games at the 2018 World Cup. Belgium finished third in the tournament. In June 2021, Boyata was part of Belgium's squad for UEFA Euro 2020, where he played in 2 games.
