Life and career
Dee Hsu was born in Taipei, Taiwan, as the youngest of three sisters. Her eldest sister is Hsu Si-hsien, followed by Barbie Hsu, with whom Dee formed a musical duo initially known as "S.O.S." (Sisters of Shu). Their cousin, Chelsey Chang Chia-ru, is a news anchor and journalist.
In the late 1990s, due to copyright disputes with the music label, the duo renamed themselves A.S.O.S. (All Sisters of Shu). By 1999, A.S.O.S. transitioned away from their music careers to hosting. They co-hosted Guess from 1996 to 2000 and 100% Entertainment from 1998 to 2005.
From 2004 to 2016, Dee co-hosted the popular talk show Kangsi Coming with Kevin Tsai, establishing herself as a leading figure in Taiwanese television.
In 2014, Dee released her first solo EP under the stage name Elephant DEE. The EP features five songs composed by Dee; four include lyrics written by her, and one has lyrics by Barbie.
Personal life
Dee dated Micky Huang for four years until their high-profile breakup in 2000 at the height of Huang's popularity, which derailed Huang's career due to his alleged cheating with Bowie Tsang. Dee has proclaimed publicly that Huang is the ex-boyfriend she loved the most. The former couple reconciled on Kangsi Coming in 2015.
Dee married Taiwanese businessman Mike Hsu in 2005. They have three daughters, Elly (许曦文), Lily (许韶恩) and Alice (许曦恩).
In August 2013, Dee, her husband and her father-in-law Hsu Ching-hsiang were sued in the Top Pot Bakery scandal, over the well known bakery using artificial ingredients in “all-natural” bread. In 2014, prosecutors dropped charges of insider trading against Dee and others. The Taipei district court ruled that Dee was not liable for Top Pot Bakery's false claims.
Views
In 2021, Dee referred to Taiwan's Olympians as "national players." Chinese nationalist internet users panned the comment, which led to a loss of several endorsements. The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China called the incident a “deliberate act” by those with “political manipulation” in mind, targeting Taiwanese celebrities working in the mainland and sabotaging cultural interactions. The Office also called for netizens to "sharpen their instincts and not allow secessionists to cause problems with their bad behaviour”. Dee thanked the Office for clarifying the accusation of her supporting Taiwan independence on Weibo.
