Deer Ridge Open Space is a large natural area in Newbury Park, California. It covers about 188 acres. This beautiful space has mountains, ridges, and canyons. It is filled with chaparral plants and oak trees.

This open space is next to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. A very long path called the Los Robles Trail goes right through Deer Ridge Open Space. This trail is managed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA). It is their longest trail!

Exploring Deer Ridge Open Space

Deer Ridge Open Space is a great place for outdoor fun. Many people come here to hike, bike, or run. You can also ride horses on the trails. It is a perfect spot to enjoy nature and get some exercise.

The Los Robles Trail

The Los Robles Trail is the main path in Deer Ridge Open Space. It stretches for over 25 miles! This long trail connects Newbury Park to Westlake Village. Along the way, it links up with many other open spaces and parks. These include Los Padres Open Space and Hope Nature Preserve.

As you walk or ride on the Los Robles Trail, you will see amazing views. You can look out over the entire Conejo Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail also leads to a high point called Angel Vista. From there, you get even more incredible views of Newbury Park.

What Animals and Plants Live Here?

Deer Ridge Open Space is home to many different animals. It is part of a special path that animals use to move safely through Southern California. This path connects to places like Point Mugu State Park.

The plants here are also very interesting. You will see lots of Chaparral and Coastal sage scrub. There are also many areas with beautiful oak woodlands.

How to Visit Deer Ridge Open Space

It is easy to find Deer Ridge Open Space. The main entrance is on Potrero Road. There is also a smaller entrance at the end of Felton Street.

If you are coming from the Ventura Freeway (U.S. 101), take the Wendy Drive exit. Head south towards the Santa Monica Mountains. When you reach the end of the road, turn left onto Potrero Road. Drive for about half a mile, and you will see the parking lot for the trailhead on your left.
